Göksu Üçtaş Şanlı (pronounced [ˈɟœcsu ˈytʃtaʃ]; born August 30, 1990 in Şahinbey, Gaziantep Province, Turkey) is a Turkish female artistic gymnast.
Career[]
Göksu Üçtas was meant to perform at the 2008 Summer Olympics but failed to do so due to a severe neck injury which could have stopped her gymnastics career. She won the silver medal on vault at the 2009 Mediterranean Games held in Pescara, Italy.[2]
In 2010, Üçtaş won the bronze medal on floor at the FIG Artistic Gymnastics World Cup A held in Doha, Qatar.[3] At the World Cup in Artistic Gymnastics-Grand Prix Ostrava 2010 in the Czech Republic, she won the gold medal on floor exercise, silver medal on balance beam and silver medal on vault.[4] She graduated as a teacher of physical education and sports from the Abant Izzet Baysal University in Bolu Province in 2011.[5]
Üçtaş qualified to participate in the 2012 Summer Olympics as the first-ever Olympic gymnast from Turkey.[1] Due to an injury suffered during training prior to the Olympics,[6] she only competed on balance beam. With 11.333 points, with a d-score of 3.3 and an e-score of 8.033, Üçtaş ranked 77th, and did not advance to the final.[7]
In January 2013, Üçtaş announced her retirement from active sports due to a long-lasting injury on her left elbow.[8] On August 14, 2013, she married gymnast Özgün Şanlı in İzmir.[9]
Üçtaş Şanlı gave birth to her daughter in 2015. Eleven months later, she returned to competition at the 2016 Mersin World Challenge Cup and won the gold medal on floor.[10]
At the 2017 Baku World Cup, Üçtaş Şanlı finished seventh on balance beam and fifth on floor. At the 2017 Doha World Cup, she finished sixth on balance beam and fifth on floor.[10]
At the 2018 Baku World Cup, Üçtaş Şanlı finished eighth on vault, sixth on balance beam, and sixth on floor. At the Koper World Challenge Cup, she finished fifth on balance beam. At the Mersin World Challenge Cup, she won the bronze medal on vault, the gold medal on balance beam, and the gold medal on floor.[10] At the Mediterranean Games, she won the silver medal on floor.[11]
At the 2019 Koper World Challenge Cup, Üçtaş Şanlı finished sixth on balance beam and seventh on floor. At the Mersin World Challenge Cup, she won the gold medal on floor.[10]
At the 2020 European Championships, Üçtaş Şanlı won the silver medal on floor, which was the first-ever medal for Turkey at the event.[12]
