The area governed by the council

Galway County Council (Irish: Comhairle Chontae na Gaillimhe) is the authority responsible for local government in County Galway, Ireland. As a county council, it is governed by the Local Government Act 2001. The council is responsible for housing and community, roads and transportation, urban planning and development, amenity and culture, and environment. The council has 39 elected members. Elections are held every five years and are by single transferable vote. The head of the council has the title of Cathaoirleach (Chairperson). The county administration is headed by a Chief Executive, Kevin Kelly. The county seat is at Áras an Chontae (County Hall) in Galway city.

History[]

Galway County Council initially met in Tuam.[1] It subsequently acquired the old Galway Infirmary[2] and converted it into a new county headquarters.[3] A modern facility, known as County Hall (Irish: Áras an Chontae), was built on the same site and completed in 1999.[4]
