Generalbezirk Estland

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Generalbezirk Estland was one of the four administrative subdivisions of Reichskommissariat Ostland, the civilian occupation regime established by Nazi Germany for the administration of the Baltic states (Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania) and the western part of the Byelorussian Soviet Socialist Republic. Generalbezirk Estland was organized on 5 December 1941[1] on the territory of German-occupied Estonia, which had until then been under the military administration of the Army Group North of the Wehrmacht. The capital of Generalbezirk Estland was Tallinn and its administration was led by Commissioner-General Karl-Siegmund Litzmann. Generalbezirk Estland ceased to exist on 17 September 1944, as the Red Army was approaching Tallinn and the administration of those parts of Estonia which still were under German occupation reverted to Army Group North.
