Genetic Roulette: The Gamble of Our Lives is a feature-length documentary directed by filmmaker Jeffrey M. Smith.[2][3] The 85 minutes long film was first released in August 2012. The film was selected as the 2012 Movie of the Year[4] by the Solari Report and it received 2012 Viewer’s Choice Transformational Film of the Year award from Aware Guide.[5]

Plot and Themes[]

The theme of the film is based on the fact that chronic diseases are seen responsible for 60% to 70% deaths of the total death occurring in the United States.[6][7] The film explores the potential health hazards posed by genetically modified organisms in typical everyday food intake. This is done in the course of interviewing different concomitant professionals like scientists, activists and physicians and building up the storyline of the film while connecting these interviews and drawing informed conclusions. In most of the cases, several allegedly ill-effects of the GMO-based foods are investigated. For example, the process of blasting of foreign genes into cells as it is done in unregulated genetic modification can lead to cause "massive collateral damage" in the concerned plant. The mutated DNA as the product of such plant, when consumed, has the possibility of causing ill effects like allergic reactions, immune disorders, inflammation, etc. The film also alleges the collusion between the Biotechnology Industry and the US Government. During the assessment of the GMO by FDA back in 1990s, the scientists involved in the assessment raised the concerns about the possible ill-effects such as allergies and new diseases. But such warnings were ignored by the policy decision-maker Michael Taylor, a former attorney of Monsanto, and GMO foods were granted the permission of commercial production on priority.[8][9]

Receptions[]

Critical Reception[]

The film received mixed reception from within the academic community and general viewers. John Robbins mentioned the film to be "Meticulously documented, thoroughly comprehensive, and rivetingly presented, this is more than an adventure story with intense drama and high stakes. It is in fact one of the most important stories ever told."[10]

When considering the claims made in the film regarding GMO being responsible for severe health issues, ST Frequency has mentioned the interviews and references used to be "compelling, even when admittedly speculative". And has commented about the film's depiction regarding the "collusion between the U.S. government and the biotech industry" with the "key figures in the FDA, USDA, and top brass at the biotech giant Monsanto" to be a "sordid tale" while being "most persuasive".[11] Documentarylovers commented the documentary to be important for providing "compelling evidence to help explain the deteriorating health of Americans".[12]
