Colonel General Gennady Valeryevich Zhidko (Russian: Геннадий Валериевич Жидко; born in 12 September 1965), is an Uzbek-born Russian military leader who commanded the Eastern Military District from November 2018 to November 2021. He was awarded the title Hero of the Russian Federation in 2017. He is a colonel general as of 2020.

As of November 2021, Zhidko now heads the  [ru]. He was appointed as a Deputy Defence Minister by President Putin on 12 November 2021.[3]

Biography[]

Gennady Zhidko was born on 12 September 1965[4] in the village of Yangiabad in Uzbekistan.

In 1987, he graduated from the Tashkent Higher Tank Command School.[5][4][2][1]

He served in the 27th Guards Motorized Rifle Division of the Volga and Volga-Ural Military Districts with a base in the village of Totskoye, Totsky District, Orenburg Oblast, where he rose from platoon commander to division commander, was early promoted to captain, and then to colonel.[2][4] He received awards for organizing fire training from the commander of the Ural Military District, by Colonel-General Alexander Baranov.[6]

Zhiko the commander of the 92nd motorized rifle regiment with a base in Dushanbe, Tajikistan.[7][1]

In 1997, he graduated from the Military Academy of Armored Forces named after Marshal of the Soviet Union R. Ya. Malinovsky, and in 2007, he graduated from the Military Academy of the General Staff of the Armed Forces of the Russia.[5][2][4][1]

From August 2007 to July 2009, he was the Commander of the 20th Guards Motorized Rifle Division of the North Caucasian Military District, based in Volgograd.[2][4] During his tenure in this post, he continued the work of Major General Aleskandr Lapin to establish trusting relationships with military groups, improve combat and technical training.[4] He also began to transfer the division to the "contract".[8][9]

From July 2009 to January 2011, he was the Deputy Commander of the 20th Guards Army of Moscow, then Western Military Districts with headquarters in Voronezh.[2] From January 2011 to January 2012 - Chief of Staff - First Deputy Commander of the 6th Combined Arms Army of the Western Military District, based in Saint Petersburg.[10][2] He participated in the formation of this unit, for his organizational skills he was noted by the commander of the 6th Army, Major General ,[11] with the Commander of the West Military District, Colonel-General Arkady Bakhin.[12]

From January 2015 to September 2016, he was Chief of Staff - First Deputy Commander of the 2nd Guards Combined Arms Army, and from September 2016 to November 2017 - Commander of the 2nd Guards Combined Arms Army of the Central Military District with headquarters in Samara.[2] The army under his repeatedly took part in surprise exercises and checks,[13] during which showed high combat readiness and mobility.[14][15] During the Zapad-2017 military exercises, the army units were quickly deployed from Samara to the Kola Peninsula.[16]

On February 20, 2016 he was awarded the military rank of Major General.[17]

On 9 May 2017, Zhidko hosted a parade on Kuibyshev Square in Samara, dedicated to the 72nd anniversary of victory in the Great Patriotic War.[27]

From 22 November 2017 to 3 November 2018, he was the Deputy Chief of the General Staff of the Armed Forces of the Russia.[28][29][30]

On 11 June 2018, he was awarded the military rank of Lieutenant General.[31]

In November 2018, Zhidko was appointed commander of the Eastern Military District,[32] replacing Alexander Zhuravlyov, who had transferred to the post of commander of the Western Military District, on 13 November,[33][34] he was presented to the leadership at the district headquarters in Khabarovsk.[35][36]

He became a Colonel General as of 11 June 2020.[37]
