George L. Thurston III

George Lee Thurston III (October 1, 1925 - March 20, 2001) was a reporter and writer. His work included broadcast television, newspaper, and radio reports as well as books.[1] He wrote about researching ancestry and his family's ancestry [2][3] as well as on rivers n Florida.[4] His book on ancestry research has been recommended.[5] He was the first full-time broadcast journalist to cover the Florida Legislature.[6] He was also involved in amateur radio.[7] He had a fishing column.[8]

Thurston was afflicted with tuberculosis when he was 14.[8]

He wrote about the Wacissa River.

He wrote about the Rodenberry / Rodenbery family[9] as well as other families.[10]

He and a colleague toppled the nomination of Harrold Carswell to the U.S. Supreme Court when they uncovered a speech he had given in support of White Supremacy.[11]

He had a wife Maryjane and four children.[6]

He covered civil rights protests[8][12] including lunch counter sit ins.[13] He cultivated a relationship with governor Reubin Askew.[14]

He is buried at Oakland Cemetery in Tallahassee.
