Geraldine Hakewill (born 13 July 1987)[1] is an Australian actress, singer, and songwriter.[2] She is known for playing Chelsea Babbage, the lead role, in the 2016 Australian TV series Wanted and Peregrine Fisher in Ms Fisher's Modern Murder Mysteries.

Early life and education[]

Hakewill was born in Paris, where her family was living temporarily while her father, Peter, a general practitioner, was working in tropical disease management. At nine months old, her family moved to Geneva, Switzerland, then to Chennai in south India so that her parents could practise meditation in an ashram; her mother Elizabeth continues to teach meditation. Hakewill grew up in Sydney from age four with her younger brother named Lucas. At 14 years old her parents divorced and her father re-married giving her two step-siblings and two half-siblings.[3] Hakewill graduated from the Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts.[3]

Career[]

Acting[]

She played Beth in the 2010 Australian film Uninhabited directed by Bill Bennett, and played Ella in 2011 Australian thriller Wasted on the Young. She has also appeared in productions for the Sydney Theatre Company, Belvoir St Theatre and Bell Shakespeare Company.[4] In 2011, she played Angela in a production of the play Heaven by Kit Brookman, performed at the Old 505 Theatre in Surry Hills, Sydney.[5]

Hakewill auditioned five times for her starring role as Chelsea Babbage in Wanted[1] from which she received a TV Week Logie nomination for Most Outstanding Newcomer.[6] In 2019, it was announced that she would be starring in the spinoff series based on Kerry Greenwood's series of novels, Ms Fisher's Modern Murder Mysteries as its lead, Peregrine Fisher.[7]

Hakewill had a recurring role as inmate Kylee Webb on the seventh season of Wentworth.[8]

At the Darlinghurst Theatre Company in 2019, Hakewill played the shy character of Mari in the play "The Rise and Fall of Little Voice" where she also showcased her vocal talents.[3][9][10]

In 2021, she plays Dr. Kareena Wells in ABC's eight-part psych ward drama, Wakefield.[11] Filming began in the summer of 2020 but bushfires pushed the production to the Southern Highlands of NSW which then was also affected by fire.[3] In March 2020 the COVID-19 pandemic shut down shooting for five months, and the cast were able to secure the government JobKeeper payments during the hiatus.[3]

Music[]

Under the moniker "Geri", Hakewell's music career lends itself to folk and jazz sounds inspired by strong female musicians such as Karen O and Feist.[2][12] Her self written EP You've Never Seen This Smile, was released March 28, 2018.[2]

Personal life[]

Hakewill is engaged to actor Mark Leonard Winter, whom she has been with since 2017; they have two dogs and live in Daylesford, Victoria.[3] Winter co-starred with her in the 2020 film Disclosure.[13] One of her close friends is fashion designer Bianca Spender.[14]

Hakewill has been open about her anxiety and has stated, “Meditation has always been a big part of my self-care mental health practices. The meditation Mum teaches is called ‘heartfulness’, which is a raja yoga meditation: very simple, no chanting. You sit in silence and focus on the heart. I’ve done that since I was little”.[3]

Her favourite show is The West Wing, her favourite movie Amélie and she dreams of one day working with actress Juliette Binoche.[15]
