Internet career[]

On September 9, 2011,[12] encouraged by a friend of his,[13] he uploaded his first video on HolaSoyGerman channel titled "Las cosas obvias de la vida" (lit. "The obvious things in life"),[14] which currently has 18 million views.[15] The videos on his channel HolaSoyGerman consisted of humorous monologues talking about everyday life situations.[16][17] In an interview he had with BBC Mundo, German stated that "The humor I do on YouTube is quite innocent. I've always liked making people laugh by making fun of myself, never of others."[18]

In 2013, Garmendia started a secondary channel called JuegaGerman, where he mainly uploaded gameplays alongside other contents,[19] in that same year he uploaded the most popular video on his channel HolaSoyGerman entitled "Los Hermanos" (Brothers),[20] he also moved to the city of Los Angeles, California where "he had the intention of starting his acting career."[21] In August 2014, he won the "Digital Icon" category from MTV Millennial Awards,[22][23][24][25][26] in which the "maximum representative of the Latin American culture that consumes Twitter, YouTube and Instagram" is chosen.[27][28]

In July 2015, Garmendia was included in a list from the American magazine Washington Post, obtaining a second place, only behind the Swedish Gamer PewDiePie.[29] Other YouTubers included in the list are Jenna Marbles,[30] Ryan Higa,[31] and the duo Smosh.[32] In October 2015, the actor Jack Black appeared in a video titled "Tipos de alumnos" (Types of students),[33][34][35][36] to publicize the movie, Goosebumps (known in Hispanic America as «Escalosfríos»).[37][38][39] In March 2016, the Canadian Rock band, Simple Plan, made up of Chuck, Jeff and David participated in the opening of the video titled "La Comida".[40]

In June 2016, Garmendia won the category "Master Gamer" from MTV Millennial Awards 2016,[41][42] and in addition he received two Diamond plates for reach 10 million on his two channels HolaSoyGerman and JuegaGerman.[43] On November 20, 2016, Garmendia last uploaded HolaSoyGerman titled "Como Encontrar Trabajo" and has not uploaded any video since.[44] On a video titled "Esto pasa si busco mi nombre en YouTube", explained that this was due to the time and wear it took to create each HolaSoyGerman video,[45] this clarification came in response to a Spanish YouTuber who accused him of taking drugs to make his videos.[46]

In December 2016, he was included on the list of «The Highest-Paid YouTuber Stars» according to Forbes magazine,[47] being the only Latin American YouTuber on the list.[48] in 2018 the BBC chose him as the second most popular YouTuber on the platform, only behind PewDiePie,[49] later on July 16, 2019, he was included in the list of «the 25 Most Influential People on the Internet», made by Time magazine.[50] In October 2021 the Eliot Awards awarded him the "Legend Award",[51][52][53] due to his long career in YouTube.[54][55]

On April 5, 2016, his band Ancud released a 4-track EP titled "Así es Normal",[74] the band name was taken from homonymous city of Chiloe. On November 22, 2016, Garmendia uploaded the Cambia video clip official on his YouTube account under the direction of Gonzalo Castro and the production of Retina Audiovisual,[75] German in a tweet of November 12 announced that he would be present at the third Club Media Fest that would be held on December 10 of that year[76] in Club de Gimnasia y Esgrima de Buenos Aires (GEBA).[77] In April 2017, Ancud released their first album titled "Se hacen realidad", whose track list contains four songs from the 2016 EP "Así es Normal" with an addition of three new singles, among them is the one who gave the album its name.[78]

On April 18, 2017, it was announced that the band would debut at the Caupolicán Theatre on November 4, 2017.[79][80][81][82][83][84] That same day, the editor of the Chilean magazine La Tercera Paulo Quinteros, wrote an article entitled "Germán Garmendia: Para de robar." In which he criticized the 40,000 pesos offered by the event to be able to enter, he also affirmed that this "is a capital impudence that makes it clear that when you can steal, (and obviously I do not mean the literal sense of the word) he's going to try to steal as much as possible."[85] The music video from the track "Se hacen realidad" was uploaded to YouTube on June 16, 2017,[86] and in July of that same year, his band was nominated in Best South Artist and Best New Artist in the third edition of the Music Awards from the HTV.[78]

Personal life[]

Garmendia from the age of 18 he lived in several different places, among them Santiago de Chile, Mexico City[62], Los Angeles, etc.[100] Garmendia was a vegetarian for ethical reasons from 2015 to 2017,[101] and has been in a loving relationship with his girlfriend Lenay Chantelle Olsen[102] since 2016.[103] In a video from November 21, 2016, titled "Mi Historia de Bullying" (My Bullying Story), he spoke about the bullying that he suffered when he was twelve years old, mainly because of their thinness. "Since he was little he was quite a shy and introverted person," explains Garmendia, which is why his mother enrolled him in theatre classes intending to remove that shyness that he had at that time.[104]

He also relates "that one day I went to the hairdresser and I had a trauma with cutting my hair because when I had it short it made me look thinner. I remember I was at the hairdresser and, for some reason of fate, this group of boys passed by and they approached me and made fun".[105] In his story, assures: «They cornered me for being thin. They will think that no one is bullied for it, but when you are little they try to hurt you with anything. I began to feel that he was the most different person in the world. I saw that everyone was happy and I was out of it. I grew up with a little voice in my head that said "it's wrong to be who you are"».[104]

Polemics[]

Accusations of using Bots[]

In 2013, a YouTuber named YoLordestructor uploaded a video claiming that Garmendia had used bots, citing a deleted HolaSoyGerman video titled "Internet y Redes Sociales" (The Internet and Social Networks), showing several websites bookmarked of alleged bots in his computer such as YouLikeHits, SocialClump, and AddSocials at the timestamp 0:40.[106] Later, Garmendia responded to the controversy on a video which is currently deleted.[107]

Incident in Mexico[]

In April 2014, Garmendia was speculated to appear at the Telmex Digital Village in Zócalo, Mexico City.[108] The event experienced an unplanned excess of attendees and many people were waiting in line to see him, but he fainted due to heat exposure and had to be evacuated. Eventually, the crowd became unruly, with attendees forcing their way past barriers and into the tented area, causing many more injuries. Ten people were injured when a light element fell into the crowd. After security regained control of the situation, the crowd was dispersed and Garmendia's event was cancelled. He later expressed condolences to his fans for the incident.[109][110]
