In the Gladiator line-up, Nightshade (Judy Simpson) and Zodiac (Kate Staples) did not return following their reduced appearances in series 5 due to illness and injury. Panther (Helen O'Reilly) and Trojan (Mark Griffin) also left the show and Laser (Tina Andrew) left the team after a single series. Five new Gladiators were introduced: Fox (Tammy Baker), Gold (Lize Van Der Walt), Rocket (Pauline Richards), Siren (Alison Paton) and Khan (Radosav Nekic).
Events[]
Two events dropped from the previous series returned - Pyramid and Pole-Axe - with amended rules, and one new event, Tightrope, made its debut. Pursuit was dropped from the event roster for this series for unknown reasons.
The Eliminator course was heavily modified, the unpopular 'Spaghetti Junction' element was replaced by a second, smaller cargo net, which contenders had to bounce onto from a mini-trampoline. The roller beams were replaced by a double trapeze section for contenders to traverse across to the large cargo net. The balance beam was replaced by two see-saw beams, and contenders were required to touch a yellow marker at the end with at least one foot, otherwise they would be sent back to attempt it again.
Starting from this series, some events were split so the female contenders and Gladiators played one event while the males played another. This allowed the number of events per episode to increase back to six, plus the Eliminator.
Tightrope[]
Originally due to debut in the previous series, Tightrope was the only new event for series 6. Contender and Gladiator were harnessed onto their own tightrope and competed in a head-to-head race travelling up their tightrope using their own pulley. When they reached the changeover station, they had to unclip themselves from the harness and fly down a zip wire to hit a target on the other side, which detached their opponent's zip wire restraints and sent them crashing into the safety net below. 10 points are awarded if a contender won the race.
Prizes[]
For this series, the winners received a new car and £1,000, while the runners-up each received an island holiday in the Comores and £1,000 in spending money.
Other changes[]
The most notable change in the show's line-up was the departure of co-host John Fashanu. Fashanu had been accused in a football match fixing controversy the previous year, whilst the fifth series aired on ITV, and the producers chose not to renew his contract. He was replaced for this series by England rugby union player Jeremy Guscott, and Andrew Norgate was replaced as assistant referee by Eugene Gilkes for this series.
