"Got to Get" is a 1989 song released by Swedish music duo Rob'n'Raz featuring singer and rapper Leila K. It is her debut single and it was released as the lead single from their album, Rob'n'Raz featuring Leila K. The song became a big hit in Europe, reaching the top 10 in many countries, like in the UK, where the song peaked at number 8.[1] "Got to Get" was a number-one hit in Iceland and reached number 11 on the Eurochart Hot 100 in March 1990. Outside Europe, the single peaked at number 48 on the Billboard Hot 100 in the US[2] and number 57 in Australia, where it spent 20 weeks in the top 100.[3]

Background[]

Leila K was discovered by Rob'n'Raz when singing in a music contest. They liked her music and offered her a recording contract in 1988. Together with Rob'n'Raz she had her first hit in 1989 with the song "Got to Get" (first recorded within the UK as a pre-production demo by Pete Towns of P&P Productions) and released an album in 1990, Rob'n'Raz featuring Leila K.

Critical reception[]

American magazine Billboard described the song as "explosive"[4] and "an infectious club-inspired stomper".[5] Editor Bill Coleman stated that "as infectious, house-inflected pop/rap goes, this track wins on its own."[6] Ernest Hardy from Cashbox wrote, "The inevitable Neneh Cherry clone arrives with a swiftness that in itself is awe-inspiring. Vocally, this well could be Miss Cherry. There’s the oh-so-slight hint of a rasp, coupled with sass and lots of ’tude."[7] Music & Media commented, "The world will soon wake up to this 17-year-old female rapper from Gothenburg who can easily compete with artists like Neneh Cherry or the Cookie Crew."[8]

Music video[]

There were made two different music videos to accompany the song. One of them was directed by Scottish director Paul Boyd. David Thomas- Stylist Robert Dexter - Assistant stylist.
