Grêmio Esportivo Sapucaiense is a Brazilian football club from Sapucaia do Sul, Rio Grande do Sul state, founded on July 28, 1941.

History[]

The Grêmio Esportivo Sapucaiense was founded on July 28, 1941, after the closure of the Grêmio Esportivo Iraí, a club founded in 1936, in red and black colors, from which Sapucaiense inherited the uniforms and the field, located in the same place where today it is located. Arthur Mesquita Dias himself.

Since its foundation until 2004, Sapucaiense was an amateur club that stood out in the municipal championships of Sapucaia do Sul, rivaling traditional amateur teams in the city. Their main opponents were Vera Cruz, Vila Vargas, Sial and Taurus, teams with which Sapucaiense disputed fierce classics. In 1971 he competed in the Campeonato Gaúcho Amador [1].

Over the years Sapucaiense stood out, starting to compete in official competitions of the Gaúcha Football Federation with their teams from the grassroots categories. In 1999, FGF launched an amateur state championship between cities for boys aged up to 21, called Copa Sul Sub-21. Sapucaiense represented Sapucaia do Sul and was champion [2]. In 2002 he participated in the Campeonato Gaúcho Amador [3].

This rise of Sapucaiense culminated in his professionalization in 2005, when he started to compete in the Gaúcho Championship and the FGF Cup.

In 2007 the club was champion of the Access Division [4], a milestone that set the red-black Sapucaia do Sul in the professional football scene of Rio Grande do Sul and guaranteed the club's access, for the first time, to Gauchão [5 ].

Sapucaiense played for Gauchão for two consecutive years. In 2008, in his debut year, he exceeded expectations and finished the championship in an honorable 6th place. [6] A historic campaign for the club and the city. However, at the 2009 Gauchão, Sapucaiense had a very irregular campaign and ended the competition in 15th place, returning to the Access Division. [6]

Due to the 3rd place won at the 2010 FGF Cup and the fact that the final of Gauchão 2011 was decided by the Gre-Nal duo, Sapucaiense managed to qualify for the 2012 Copa do Brasil. [6] In his first national competition in history, he was eliminated in the 1st phase by the Ponte Preta team. [7]

In their preparation for the 2019 Segundona Gaúcha dispute, Sapucaiense drew goalless with Internacional in a training game that marked Paolo Guerrero's debut with the colored shirt [8].

Two great players in the history of Brazilian football (and who competed in World Cups) emerged in the basic categories of Sapucaiense: Alcindo (1966 Cup) and Douglas Costa [6] (2018 Cup).
