The women's vault competition at the 2012 Summer Olympics in London, United Kingdom. The event was held at the North Greenwich Arena on 5 August.[1]

Qualification[]

The results for qualifications were similar to the results for the event final on this apparatus. The top three athletes were McKayla Maroney (15.800), Sandra Izbasa (15.316), and Maria Paseka (15.049). [2]

Defending world champion and top qualifier McKayla Maroney of the United States was by far the best vaulter in the sport at the time and overwhelming favourite to win the individual vault apparatus finals.

Oksana Chusovitina representing Germany in the 2012 Summer Olympics in London till then had secured the record of competing in the most number of Olympic Games (6) on the same event, individual vault apparatus finals. These Games were also consecutive while having represented three nations: Soviet Union or Unified Team (1992), Uzbekistan (1996, 2000 & 2004), and Germany (2008 & 2012).

  • *Black fell down face first during her first vault and it was deemed by the judges that her feet did not land first (though replays suggested this may not have been the case). She went to attempt a second vault, but ran past the table due to realising that she was more injured than she thought. She had the option to attempt her second vault again, but declined due to injury.
