Hallikar (Kannada: ಹಳ್ಳಿಕಾರ್) is a breed of cattle native to the state of Karnataka, India. It derives its name from the Hallikar community traditionally known for their cattle rearing.[1] It is commonly found in the traditional Hallikar belt of Mysore, Mandya, Hassan, Magadi,Kanakpura and Chikmangaluru districts of South Karnataka.[2][3]

Hallikar breed association president is VARTHUR SANTHOSH.Hallikar is having the more resistable power than all other breeds . Once Brazil took all the breeds from the world even they took Hallikar breed they said all breeds have resistable power but Hallikar has the more resistable power than any other breed have . Hallikar is known for his strength hence it is used in ploughing field . It is only the breed which have the capacity to work continuously from 18 to 20 hours in a day . The famous fair of Karnataka for hallikar cattle is Ghati Subramanya, Saplam,Kadalekayi parishe .

Hallikar cow,bull or ox is used in bullock cart race . Hassan,Mandya, Mysore and Chikmangaluru are famous districts for race .

If we drink the milk of Hallikar cow we don't get any disease like BP, Sugar,cancer and many other diseases can be prevented by drinking the milk of hallikar cow .


Long, vertical and upward horns, large humps in males, moderate to long height and medium size of the body, and white to grey and occasionally black complexions, are the characteristics of the breed. The bulls of this breed of cattle are known for their strength and endurance, and are mainly used for draft purposes. It is classified as a draught breed in India.[4][5]

It is one of the two breeds, along with Amrit Mahal, which have received the royal patronage and care from the erstwhile Maharajas of Mysore State through conservation and development. The breed is said to be the origin of Amrit Mahal cattle.[6]

The Department of Posts, Government of India commemorated the breed by releasing a postage stamp in its name in 2000.[7]
