Hammer of the Gods (also known as Thor: Hammer of the Gods) is a 2009 made-for-TV film, starring Zachery Ty Bryan, directed by Todor "Toshko" Chapkanov and produced by Jeffery Beach and Phillip J. Roth for the Syfy channel. It tells the story of the thunder god Thor, after he defeated the Midgard Serpent and died, then was reincarnated into a mortal man. Thor, along with his two brothers and friends travel to a mysterious island at Midgard's edge, seeking glory and fame. Upon arriving they encounter strange creatures and they start searching the island for answers. Meanwhile, Thor keeps seeing visions of a mighty warrior and a big hammer and Freyja tells him that his visions are clues. So they start searching for the hammer.
Plot[]
A longboat sails in search of adventure and glory led by the noble Baldur accompanied by his young inexperienced brother Thor and a crew of loyal warriors, with the main followers including Sif, Ulfrich and Freyja. The ship strays into uncharted waters and comes upon an island where they discover both danger and mystery. The crew quickly notices the absence of wildlife as they attempted to forage for food. They press further through the interior of the wilderness eventually discovering a village inhabited by starving survivors of a decimated population. A young village woman named Hel explains the village has been attacked by werewolves and escape is impossible as the creatures control all paths leading in or out of the woods. Ulfrich is disgusted with the perceived cowardice shown by the people and insists on abandoning the villagers and resuming their quest for glory elsewhere. Baldur prevails with the defense of the villagers still being kinsmen despite their lack of fighting skill or spirit.
As events unfold, Thor experiences visions of a warrior wielding a divine hammer against an unseen foe. Freya, the group's soothsayer asserts that the visions allude to Thor's destiny. Thor is initially dismissive of this interpretation, believing that Baldur is meant to inherit glory and power. The Norsemen encounter the werewolves on several occasions, losing members of their party until Baldur, who had been heavily criticized by Ulfrich by his previous lack of decisive action, orders a defense to be held at the village where they construct an improvised stockade. One night, the werewolves attack, easily breaching the stockade before fighting the warriors. Casualties are dealt to both sides, ending with a victory for the humans. Thor is praised for his valor in the battle and the group discuss what they discover later about the werewolves' true identity. It is revealed the werewolves were once members of the village. Hel, is also a werewolf and eventually reports to her master Fenris of the failure to destroy Thor and his companions. Meanwhile discord heightens in the group as Ulfrich sees Sif (his lover) growing close to Thor. After a brief duel is interrupted by Baldur, Ulfrich breaks with the group. Baldur decides the group will leave the village and resume their journey, still availing the option for Ulfrich to rejoin them if he chooses. Hel later approaches and seduces Ulfrich with promises of power and companionship. The betrayal grants Ulfrich a level of superhuman strength, which allows him to overwhelm Baldur later in a confrontation on a bridge. The surviving members turn to Thor who assumes command and leads the group on. They come upon an old explorer named Vali who failed to find the mythic hammer. He also shared his knowledge of the werewolves who inhabited the island. The group eventually arrives at the lair of Fenris where they are confronted by Ulfrich. Thor fights and successfully kills Ulfrich and rejoins his companions Sif and Freyja. The women are confronted by Hel who battles both at once, eventually wounding Freyja before Sif in turn kills Hel. Freyja shortly after, dies of her wounds. Thor in the meantime, confronts Fenris who informs Thor of his past. After a long struggle, Thor wields the hammer from his visions and successfully destroys Fenris. Thor and Sif rejoin Aegir and the remaining members of their crew and set sail once more for new adventures.
