The hanging parrots are birds in the parrots genus Loriculus. This is a group of small parrots from tropical southern Asia.

These little parrots, about 13 cm (5.1 in) long, are mostly green plumaged and short-tailed. Often head coloring helps to identify individual species.[1] These parrots are unique among birds for their ability to sleep upside down.[2]

Species[]

In one study from 1960, researchers discovered 23 new specimens of Hanging Parrots on Camiguin Islands located in the Philippines (Tello et. al., 2006). In addition, multiple species of Blue-Crowned Hanging Parrots have been found throughout regions of India and Ceylon (Buckley 1966), as well as 14 endemic bird species in lowland areas in New Britain (Davis et. al., 2017).
