Lieutenant General Harinder Singh PVSM, AVSM, VSM, YSM, SM is a serving General Officer in the Indian Army. He is currently serving as commandant of Indian Military Academy, assumed office in October 2020 succeeding Lt Gen Jaiveer Singh Negi. Previously, he was the Commander of XIV Corps (also known as Fire and Fury Corps) from October 2019 to October 2020, succeeding Lt Gen Yogesh Kumar Joshi, PVSM, UYSM, AVSM, VrC, SM, ADC.[1][2][3]

Early life and education[]

He is an alumnus of the National Defence Academy. He completed his graduation from Defence Services Staff College. Singh was a senior research fellow at the Institute of Defence Studies and Analyses in India and the S. Rajaratnam School of International Studies in Singapore.[4]

Career[]

Harinder Singh has held many important positions in the Indian Army. He has been the Director General of Military Intelligence (DGMI), Director General of Military Operations (DGMO) and Director General of Operational Logistics and Strategic Movement at the Integrated HQ of MoD (Army).[1] He is considered a Counter-insurgency expert.

Singh was commissioned into the Maratha Light Infantry in 1983. In October 2011, Singh headed a Rashtriya Rifles (RR) battalion in North Kashmir and had been a part of a United Nations peacekeeping mission in Congo, where he held the command of Nord Kivu Brigade.[4] Singh has also held a staff appointment with the United Nations Verification and Enforcement Mission Headquarters (United Nations Angola Verification Mission III and MONUA) in Angola.[5]

In October 2019, he was appointed as the Commander of Fire and Fury Corps.[1] He represented the Indian Army at the India-China border meet during ongoing 2020 China–India skirmishes.[6] In October 2020, he was appointed as the Commandant of the Indian Military Academy.

Writing[]

He had been a writer and has published several essays and papers. He has authored a book, titled 'Establishing India's Military Readiness Concerns and Strategy'.[4]

Honours and decorations[]

During his career, he has been awarded the Param Vishisht Seva Medal in 2021, [7] Ati Vishisht Seva Medal in 2017[8] and Vishisht Seva Medal in 2016. He received the Yudh Seva Medal for Distinguished Service in 2005.[9] He is also a recipient of the Sena Medal.[10]
