Hashim A. Sarkis (born 1964 in Beirut) is a Lebanese educator and architect. Since 2015, Sarkis has been Professor and Dean of the School of Architecture and Planning at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He is also founding principal of Hashim Sarkis Studios since 1998.

Career[]

Born in Beirut, Sarkis received his Bachelor of Architecture and Bachelor of Fine Arts from the Rhode Island School of Design (1987), his Master of Architecture with distinction (1989), and his Doctor of Philosophy from the Harvard University Graduate School of Design (1995). His dissertation was entitled "Publics and Architects: Re-Engaging Design in the Democracy," and was advised by Peter G. Rowe, K. Michael Hays, Jorge Silvetti, and Roberto Mangabeira Unger.[1]

Sarkis has worked for several architecture firms, including for Rafael Moneo on Beirut Souks. In 1998, Sarkis established his own practice, Hashim Sarkis Studios, with offices in Cambridge and Beirut. From 1995 to 2015, Sarkis was a professor at the Harvard University Graduate School of Design, where he taught design studios and courses on the history and theory of architecture.

In 2018, he was named curator of the 2020 Venice Biennale of Architecture.[2]

“How will we live together?” Is the theme chosen by Hashim Sarkis for the 2021 Biennale Architettura. “We need a new special contract” in regards of how the world has come together during the pandemic, sharing a world wide threat. The curator, Hashim Sarkis, has unfolded the importance of architecture at all levels. He has asked a question as a title in order to allow the creative process to bring in the best. He analyses the five words contained in the question: “How” relates to the approach. “Will” implies the future. “We” outlines the inclusive. “Live” goes beyond just exist. “Together’ shows the collective expression. Sarkis elaborates in his statement that the actual context brings in a plurality of answers from a plurality of sources. He breaks from the political discourse “as politics continue to divide and isolate” and he asks architects to define it all better within a different frame and space. He insists on realizing that space will hold the new social contact and space has to be explored by architects. He highlights the new freedom of our bodies with gender fluidity, new prosthetics and new social social association. The Biennal Architettura of 2021 is organized in five scales: - Among Diverse Being - As new Households - As Emerging Communities - Across Borders - As One Planet. Statement
