The Hasselt – Maastricht tramway (Dutch: Sneltram Hasselt - Maastricht) is a proposed fast tram system linking Hasselt, Belgian province of Limburg and Maastricht, Dutch province of Limburg. The project is part of the Spartacusplan of Belgian Limburg, proposed by the Belgian transport company De Lijn, with the aim to improve the province's transport links. The tramway's opening, originally scheduled for 2017, is now expected in 2025.[1][2]
Because a bridge would need to be reconstructed, tram services are not going to reach Maastricht station in the first place, but instead terminate at Maastricht Mosae Forum.
The tramway will run on a combination of new and old (to be reactivated) railways, and will facilitate an easier connection in a northeasterly direction between Maastricht (incl. the overall southern part of the Dutch Limburg province) and Antwerp (via Hasselt), as current rail services from the Dutch province to Belgium are solely in the southerly direction of Liège-Guillemins (via Maastricht).
Proposed tram stops[]
Due to issues with an existing bridge that would have carried the tram across the Maas river in Maastricht, the original plan to have the line terminate at Maastricht railway station was abandoned.[3] Below the list of future tram stops, as planning stands in September 2020.[4]
