Hauser & Wirth is a Swiss contemporary and modern art gallery.
History[]
Hauser & Wirth was founded by Iwan Wirth, Manuela Wirth, and her mother Ursula Hauser in 1992.[1] By 2021, the organization represented 93 artists or their estates.[2] The first space was opened in Zurich.[3] In this location, the gallery now has three exhibition spaces, located in the former Löwenbräu Zürich brewery building.[4] In 2003, the gallery opened a branch in London,[5] housed in a bank building designed by Sir Edwin Lutyens.[6] It has held exhibitions curated by Paul Schimmel.[7] A New York City branch was opened in 2009 on East 69th Street with its opening exhibition showing a re-creation of the work by Allan Kaprow.[8] A second New York space was opened in 2013.[9][10] That year the gallery released a book on its history, Hauser & Wirth: 20 Years, authored by Michaela Unterdörfer.[11][12]
Through their hospitality business, Artfarm,[2] Hauser & Wirth in 2014 opened a UK branch near Bruton in Somerset.[13][14][15] In March 2016 the gallery opened a branch in Los Angeles, California,[16] and in March 2018 it opened a branch in Hong Kong.[17]. In 2021, the international gallery opened in Monaco, at One Monte-Carlo. The first exhibition was dedicated to Louise Bourgeois.[18] Another facility, on Isla del Rey, also opened in July 2021 with a show dedicated to the artist Mark Bradford.[2]
