Head of a Woman

Head of a Woman (or Head of an Old Greek Woman) was painted using graphite in 1823 by the French Romantic artist Eugène Delacroix (1798–1863) as a study for his 1824 The Massacre at Chios. The woman is tightly framed and shown gazing upwards in fear. Her black dress, long dark hair and features are rendered using chiaroscuro. Today the painting is part of the collection of the Fine Arts museum of Orléans, France.
