The Head of the Security Service of Ukraine serves as a director of the Security Service of Ukraine (SBU, national internal intelligence and counter-intelligence). The head of the Security Service of Ukraine is ex officio a member of the National Security and Defense Council of Ukraine. The head of the Security Service of Ukraine is appointed or dismissed by the Supreme Council of Ukraine (Verkhovna Rada) on proposition of the President of Ukraine.
