The University was inspired by Swami Tilak of Brazil’s suggestion “that Hindus should repay America for their material success". He suggested an institution of higher learning to provide an opportunity for those studying other in other fields to learn more about Hindu traditions and teachings. The university was founded on October 24, 1993 (Vijayadashami) by Hindu leaders in USA[3] and acquired a 9.7-acre (39,000 m2) campus property with two buildings in 2000. A residential facility for full-time faculty was constructed in 2002.[citation needed][4] In 2009 the university reported it had 8,000 students taking courses either on campus or via the Internet.[2]

Its first president was Dr. Deen Dayal Khandelwal who was followed by Dr. Bhudev Sharma,[5] Dr. Kuldip C. Gupta[6] and Dr. T. R. N. Rao [7] Dr. H. R. Nagendra[8] and othere. It is currently headed by Prof Kalyan Vishwanathan, a former global practice director of Tata Consultancy Services (TCS)[9]
