Human Capital is a 2019 American-Italian drama film directed by Marc Meyers. The screenplay by Oren Moverman is based on the 2004 Stephen Amidon novel of the same name, which was also adapted into the 2013 Italian film by Paolo Virzì. The film stars Liev Schreiber, Marisa Tomei, Peter Sarsgaard, Maya Hawke, Alex Wolff, Betty Gabriel, Aasif Mandvi, Paul Sparks and Fred Hechinger.

The lives of two different families collide when their children begin a relationship that leads to a tragic accident.

The film premiered on September 10, 2019 at the Toronto International Film Festival. It was released through DirecTV Cinema on February 20, 2020, before being theatrically released on July 17, 2020, by Vertical Entertainment.[2]

Cast[]

Production[]

It was announced in October 2018 that Liev Schreiber and Alex Wolff were cast to star in the film, with Marc Meyers directing.[4] Filming began in New York City in November, with Marisa Tomei, Peter Sarsgaard, Maya Hawke and Betty Gabriel also joining.[5][6] Paul Sparks, Aasif Mandvi and Fred Hechinger were added in December.[7] The film was produced by Celine Rattray and Trudie Styler of Maven Pictures and Bert Marcus of Bert Marcus Film.[8]

Release[]

Human Capital had its world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival on September 10, 2019.[9] Shortly after, Vertical Entertainment and DirecTV Cinema acquired distribution rights to the film.[10] It was released through DirecTV Cinema on February 20, 2020, followed by a limited theatrical release on July 17, 2020.

Reception[]

As of August 2020, 67% of the 61 reviews compiled on review aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes are positive, with a weighted average of 6.08/10.[11] On Metacritic, the film holds a rating of 51 out of 100, based on 10 critics, indicating "mixed or average reviews."[12]

Behind the Lens elaborated that "thanks to strong performances filled with emotional intensity," the film "builds to an explosive revelatory conclusion as a slow burn, keeping one on the edge of their seat the entire time as each new perspective of the story unfolds."[13] Stephen Saito wrote that the film is a "great drama” with a "top-flight cast."[14] Many other reviewers noted the superb acting of the cast.[15][16][17][18] Further, Forbes notes that it is "a satisfying drama with consistently strong performances that straddle indie and mainstream with confidence,"[19] and Pam Powell states that the film is "[a] morally complex and intriguing story."[20]

The Film Yap wrote that it is "a tense, observant film that explores the authenticity of our own hearts."[21] The film was also noted as being “smart” and “absorbing” by a reviewer.[22] In film and fiction, the phrase "narrative thread" is commonly used to describe the way pieces of the plot are woven together.[23] “Human Capital” is a smart, well-cast drama that lets us see its threads as they bend back and forth on the loom, its mystery unraveling as they do.[24] Roger Moore stated that the film is "A smart, well-cast drama that lets us see its threads as they bend back and forth on the loom, its mystery unraveling as they do," while James Wegg's review concluded, "Meyers, along with his cast and crew, has artfully realized this cautionary tale of unexpected consequences when temped by "too good to be true" opportunities or letting others take the fall no mater how innocent they are."[25] Screenrant adds, "...Human Capital expertly weaves its story into a gripping mystery that's further elevated by exceptional performances."[26] AARP The Magazine proclaims, "Astounding acting in every role."[27]
