"Hurricane" is a song by American rapper Kanye West and Canadian singer-songwriter the Weeknd featuring American rapper Lil Baby, from West's tenth studio album Donda (2021).[3] The song was sent to American rhythmic contemporary radio stations on September 14, 2021 as the album's lead single.[4] It was originally slated for inclusion on West's ninth studio album Yandhi (2018), which was eventually reworked heavily and renamed to Jesus Is King (2019). The song achieved chart success in multiple countries, reaching the top ten in Australia, Canada, Ireland, Norway, the United Kingdom and the United States. On March 8, 2022, a music video was released for the song.

Background and recording[]

"Hurricane" originated from sessions for Yandhi and was slated to be included on the album before being shelved.

The foundation of "Hurricane" derived from a 3-hour jam session at Archwood Music Studio between American music producer DJ Khalil, bassist Daniel Seeff and keyboardists Josh Mease and Sam Barsh.[5][6] DJ Khalil sent the track to American music producer Nascent, who played it for West in Chicago.[7] Chance the Rapper had announced in July 2018 that West was in Chicago to produce his seven-track studio album.[8][9][10] American singer Ant Clemons recalled that the sessions for Chance the Rapper's album eventually turned into Yandhi.[11]

On September 11, 2018, West reinstated his Instagram account,[12] where he would later share a snippet of a demo version of "Hurricane", featuring himself singing the chorus.[13][14] On September 18, 2018, West announced on his Twitter page that he was releasing a new album titled Yandhi on September 29, 2018.[15] West posted another snippet of "Hurricane" to his Twitter account on September 27, 2018, reaffirming that it was to be included on the album.[16] Yandhi did not meet its promised release date and was eventually shelved. In 2019, several demos of "Hurricane" from the Yandhi sessions leaked, containing vocals from Ant Clemons, Big Sean, Ty Dolla $ign, Young Thug, and 6ix9ine.[17][18][19][20] Though "Hurricane" was scrapped along with Yandhi, the song would later on be considered for Donda, to which DJ Khalil stated "the emotional weight is why "Hurricane" lasted so long, because normally if a record is leaked, it is not going to be on the album – it's out there already."[7]

After postponing the release date of his scrapped album Yandhi twice, West revealed on Twitter that his recording sessions with Chance the Rapper in Chicago had helped the former reconnect with his roots and faith in Jesus.[21] In early 2019, West started hosting choir sessions, enlisting Jason White with arranging a choir and Nikki Grier to help with re-writing lyrics to create gospel renditions of songs in his discography.[22][23][24] Ant Clemons recalled that the sessions eventually "morphed" into West's group the Sunday Service Choir, who toured around the world with West.[11] West recorded with the Sunday Service Choir for their debut studio album Jesus Is Born (2019), which is credited solely to the group.[25][26] The Sunday Service Choir were one of the guest appearances on Donda to be revealed at the public listening parties, while they contributed additional vocals to six of the album's tracks outside of "Hurricane".[27] Their performance on the song was arranged by White and Grier, the latter of which said about the track "if you hear 120 voices [on a song], it's going to mean so much more to the listener. Having this resounding choir on top of these lyrics just makes it that much bigger."[7]

After several renditions, "Hurricane" features vocals from The Weeknd (left) and Lil Baby (right).

On July 18, 2020, West announced in a Twitter post that he would release a new album titled Donda on July 24, 2020, teasing a track list that included "Hurricane".[28] On July 21, 2020, West tweeted "Lil Baby my favorite rapper but won't do a song wit me [sic]". Lil Baby was subsequently flown out to Cody, Wyoming the same week to record for Donda.[29][30] During that session, Lil Baby recorded his verse for "Hurricane" after American singer songwriter KayCyy had suggested that he should contribute to it, saying "it's going to be one of the biggest songs, because it's the most anticipated one". KayCyy recorded a bridge for the track afterwards to try to get on the song, which KayCyy said that West "actually ended up fucking with".[31] The reworked song was first previewed officially on July 22, 2021, during a listening party at Mercedes Benz Stadium.[32] The version played at the listening party featured a hook that was "heavily autotuned" and performed by West himself.[17]

In an interview published by GQ on August 2, The Weeknd stated that "I'd love to work with Kanye again. Especially on production". Shortly after, West posted a photo of his call log on his Instagram page which included "Abel Weeknd", leading to speculation that The Weeknd was going to be on Donda.[17] "Hurricane" was teased again on August 5, 2021 at the second listening party in Mercedes Benz Stadium with The Weeknd performing the hook.[17] On August 7, American music producer and frequent West collaborator Mike Dean went to Discord and Twitter to ask fans which version of "Hurricane" they preferred between the original version, new version, or a blend of the two.[33][34] Dean stated in the Discord chat that he was showing West comments from fans,[33] which in an interview with Zane Lowe on Apple Music, Dean also said that West "took all the information he got from everyone, including online reviews, personal friends reviews and he'd just kind of digest it all and adjust the album the way he wants."[35]

Composition and lyrics[]

Musically, "Hurricane" is a R&B song with layered organs, heavy bass, atmospheric synth layers and minimal drums.[2][36][37][38] It contains processed choir vocals from Sunday Service Choir which were arranged and conducted by Jason White and Nikki Grier. The choir vocals are triggered and cut off akin to a sample,[39] which was done by Italian mixing engineer Irko at the request of West over a phone call.[40]

Lyrically, West touches on personal issues such as his breakup with Kardashian and his house.[41][42] The hook sees the Weeknd exude confidence, singing "Finally free, found the God in me / And I want you to see, I can walk on water"[43][44] while Lil Baby provides a mournful performance, rapping about losing three of his friends in the same month.[2][45]

Release and promotion[]

After Donda failed to release on August 6 as suggested by West's associates and major music companies, "Hurricane" appeared on Apple Music playlists and the Donda iTunes pre-order page as the second track on the album. The track was released on August 8, 2021, on streaming services such as Yandex and Line Music for a short period of time before getting pulled.[46][47] On September 14, 2021, the song was sent to American rhythmic contemporary radio stations as the album's lead single.[4]

On October 31, 2021, Justin Bieber and the Sunday Service Choir performed a gospel rendition of the song for their Halloween concert at an anonymous rooftop location.[48]

Music video[]

On March 8, 2022, a music video for "Hurricane" was premiered.[49] It follows on from the music videos of "Heaven and Hell", "24" and "Come to Life" as the fourth visual to be released for a Donda track.[50][49] Though West nor the featured artists do not appear in the music video, an army of digital masked avatars dressed in Yeezy Gap hoodies–resembling the music video released for "Heaven and Hell"–take their place.[51] Wren Graves, writing for Consequence of Sound, called the video a "scatterbrained stab at a disaster epic", with "seemingly-unfinished CGI that flickers in and out of focus from frame to incomprehensible frame".[52] The music video opens with the aforementioned army of digital avatars climbing fences and escaping prison to watch a faceless representation of Jesus Christ get baptized.[52][53] In the following scenes, people ascending towards the sky close to a beam of light, as well as swirling hurricane clouds can be seen.[52][54] The video also shows clips of West and his collaborators as CGI humanoids performing the song from a "strange heaven-like place".[53] The video ends with a photograph taken from Hurricane Katrina–which killed more than 1,800 people in 2005–of a American flag emerging from a piece of rubble.[52][53][54] West had previously criticized the government's response towards the crisis, stating that "George Bush doesn't care about black people".[55]

Critical reception[]

The Fader listed "Hurricane" at number 70 in its list of the 100 best songs of 2021.[56]

The song received a nomination for Best Melodic Rap Performance at the Grammy Awards in 2022.[57]

Commercial performance[]

Upon the release of Donda, "Hurricane" was the highest charting track on the album, debuting at number six on the US Billboard Hot 100, becoming West's 19th top-20 hit.[58] The song simultaneously entered at number one on both the US Christian Songs and Gospel Songs charts.[59][60] On the Billboard year-end charts for 2021, the track ranked at numbers 2 and 1 on Christian Songs and Gospel Songs, respectively.[61][62] The song also reached number one on the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop songs chart, placing among West's seven simultaneous top-10 hits that led to him tying Drake's record on the chart.[63] In Canada, the song charted at number four on the Canadian Hot 100.[64] The song was certified platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) for selling 1,000,000 certified units in the United States on January 10, 2022.[65]

The song performed best in South Africa, peaking at number one on the Top 100 streaming chart.[66] Elsewhere, the song reached number three on the New Zealand NZ Singles Chart and Norwegian Top 20 Singles chart.[67][68] In Australia, out of 19 tracks from Donda debuting within the top-50 of the ARIA Singles chart; "Hurricane" charted the highest at number four.[69] Similarly, the song debuted at number five on the Danish Top 40 record chart.[70] On the UK Singles chart, Ireland Singles Chart and Iceland Singles Chart, "Hurricane" debuted at number seven.[71][72][73] The song performed similarly in Sweden and Switzerland, reaching positions 8 and 9 respectively. Top 20 positions were attained by the song in Finland, Greece, India, Portugal, Lithuania and Slovakia. Elsewhere, the song attained top 40 positions in Austria, Czech Republic, Germany, Hungary, the Netherlands, Singapore, while it charted at number five on the Billboard Global 200.
