ICON Yachts is a Dutch shipbuilding company based in Harlingen, Netherlands.

The company's shipyard is twenty five years old and is located on reclaimed land just outside the historic port of Harlingen, with unrestricted open-water access from locks and bridges. The facilities include a huge covered and heated dry dock with space for vessels up to 150 meters of length and 7.5 meters drafts. The shipyard also features a 4.500 ton syncrolift, with new construction and refit projects benefitting from having their co-makers on site at the shipyard.[1]

In 2009, Lloyd's Register awarded ICON Yachts with the ISO 9001:2008 certificate for its quality management systems, making it one of world's first ever shipyards to receive the recognition.[2]

History[]

ICON Yachts was founded in late 2005 by Ton Van Dam and Alex Shnaider. The founders were shortly after joined by business partners, who helped further the shipyard's growth.

In 2013, ICON Yachts was featured in a six-part series called SuperYachts on Discovery Channel, a televised programme that followed some of Dutch top businesses and yards in action "to document the workmanship and technology that lies behind the finished product of superyachts."[3]

In early 2014, the company was bought out of bankruptcy by Russian banker Alexander Mazanov.

ICON Yachts' first build, the motor yacht ICON, underwent a significant transformation in 2014. Extended by five meters, to 68 meters, in only months, the luxury yacht was refitted with an infinity swimming pool, a six-person sauna, an expanded gym and a dive store, along with a number of technical upgrades.[4] Her new look was shown in a video shoot during the Monaco Yacht Show that same year.[5]

In April 2015, the Dutch shipyard announced the order of the biggest construction project in the company's history so far. The yacht designer Tim Heywood[6] is responsible for its exterior lines, which have been designed to include a helicopter landing pad on the foredeck and a beach club with a large bathing platform at the stern The luxury yacht 's length is reported to be 84 metres.[7] In 2019, following the completion of the steelwork extending the new lines of the bow, together with its helicopter platform, and new aft section and stern, with its lengthened pool, the project was signed under a new contract. In 2020 however the project is currently suspended while the interior design is undergoing new layout and styling.

In August 2017, ICON Refits signed a contract to convert a commercial vessel Motor Vessel Sanaborg,[8] a 68m ice-breaker built by Koninklijke Niestern Sander, into a luxury yacht. In association with UK design team RWD, ICON created a stunning yacht that has been an eye-catcher since she was re-launched in 2020 as MY Ragnar.[9]

In January 2020 Icon appointed Tony Gale as COO of ICON Yachts. In May 2020, shortly before redelivery of MY Ragnar this appointment was extended and Tony Gale was appointed CEO of ICON Holdings.
