Hakan Şükür was the first winner of the award in 1997.

The IFFHS World's Best Top Division Goal Scorer is a football award given annually since 1997 to the player who scores the most goals in a calendar year (in a league season from 1997 to 2019) in any of the top 60 leagues in the world (as ranked by IFFHS for that given year). The award is given by the International Federation of Football History & Statistics (IFFHS).[1]

Lionel Messi holds the record for most wins (4). Mário Jardel, Luis Suárez, and Cristiano Ronaldo are the three other players to have won the award more than once, all of them managing to win the award in successive seasons. José Cardozo holds the record for most goals in a season (58 in 2003).

Plus, the IFFHS has awarded the World's Best National Goal Scorer of the Decade in 2021, considering the years 2011–2020.[2]
