Islands of Nyne: Battle Royale is a sci-fi first person shooter battle royale game by American developer Define Human Studios for Microsoft's Windows. The game is set in a fictional universe that is in closed alpha testing as of April 28. It entered into a limited Closed Alpha State on April 28, 2017. The game has launched into Steam's Early Access program on July 12, 2018, and as of January 2022 is still in Steam's early access program.

Development[]

Development began in early 2015, with a Kickstarter[1] launching not long afterwards. In December of the same year, an exclusive Closed Pre-Alpha phase of testing began to select backers of the Kickstarter. Closed Alpha officially began as of April 28, 2017, with subsequent phases of testing being rolled out to the public along with access keys. Islands of Nyne has released in Early Access state on July 12, 2018.

In December 2018, the game's development was halted.

Features[]

These are the features that were spotted by the game's community and sent out in developer's patch notes.

  • Islands of Nyne features a hand crafted Arena, known as Terra Fictus, described as "an amalgamation of stolen monuments and souvenirs hauled back from Earth by recruiters...the facade is quickly washed away by the looming support beams and modified terraformers holding it all together."
  • A hand-crafted backstory, as "blurbed" by Rob Logan on the Islands of Nyne Kickerstarter Video[2]
  • Fast-paced arcade styled combat and movement.
  • A unique plasma convergence field that shrinks proportional to the number of players alive.
  • A functioning ranking system, ranking players based on score and rating for every game mode.
  • A cosmetic system, allowing for freedom of customisation of armour and weapon appearance.
  • A competitive experience, built from the ground up specifically for E-Sports .

Pre-game and landing[]

Upon selecting your server and game-mode, the player will be placed in a pre-game warm-up lobby. The player starts with a pistol and has to eliminate two players to progress to the next weapon.

Once the lobby is full or the game countdown forces the mll, with control over their direction atch to start, the player will be given a countdown and will be thrown into the arena. Players will be put into a freefaof travel. Looking up permits you to glide further and cover larger distances, whereas looking straight down to drop you right below where you are falling. No Parachutes necessary, you'll be thrown to the ground with a superhero-esque fist smash unscathed.

Movement[]

Movement in Islands of Nyne Is a standard affair for anyone who is used to any kind of First Person Shooter. Upon landing in the Dome, players will instinctively pick up the basics of movement

Movement can be best described as "arcade". It's fast, responsive and isn't as heavily tied to realism as other Battle Royale games.. Upon moving around, players will quickly grasp the fluidity of the movement and aiming system in the game. There is no kind of acceleration or smoothing, all input is raw. This creates a smooth and responsive aiming axis and a lightning-fast movement platform.

Jumping is another prominent feature, which unlike a lot of games does include the ability to bunny-hop. This allows for quick rapid movements up in to the air while moving forward, making you a harder target to hit. It's worth nothing in Islands of Nyne , movement speed is not restricted or slowed down by jumping. You will always move at the base speed of the item you're carrying.

Combat[]

Combat is fast, fluid and relies very heavily on player skill, accuracy and cunning.

Players will find a myriad of weapons, modifiers and armor around the playable area to assist themselves in combat. From providing health boosts, to damage reduction, as well as attachments to improve your aim and provide bonuses to your weapon's handling characteristics. .

Ballistics[]

Ballistics in Islands of Nyne are semi-realism focused. Every weapon has its own projectile speed, travel time, bullet drop, and spread.

Every weapon in Islands of Nyne has its own unique spray-pattern that is fully learn-able. Players can use the integrated Training room to brush up on their aiming and familiarise themselves with the weapons on offer.

Game modes[]

  • Free for all: Classic solo battle royale against up to 49 other players. Last contestant standing wins.
  • Doubles: Up to 25 Pairs of 2 fight until the last team is standing.
  • Squads: Currently Squads is under testing, but Trios, 4's and 5's have all been tested. No official mode has been chosen.

  • Training Room: A virtual shooting range that will allow you to touch up on your handling with all weapons currently available in the game. Includes target dummies ranging from 25m-500m, a challenge mode, toggle-able light switches and a recoil pattern wall to learn and adjust to the unique spray-patterns of any weapon in the game.
