Jakov Milatović (Montenegrin Cyrillic: Јаков Милатовић; born 1986) is a Montenegrin economist and politician who is currently serving as the Minister of Economy in the Montenegrin cabinet of Zdravko Krivokapić since 4 December 2020.[1]

Biography[]

Early life and education[]

Milatović was born in Titograd, SR Montenegro, SFR Yugoslavia, where he graduated elementary and secondary school Gymnasium "Slobodan Škerović", with top grades. He completed his undergraduate studies in the field of economics at the Faculty of Economics, University of Montenegro Faculty of Economics, with an average grade 10 (out of 10) and was a student of the generation. Milatović was honored with numerous domestic awards from the Ministry of Education, University of Montenegro, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Atlas Group etc., as well as foreign fellowships. He spent one academic year at Illinois State University as US Fellow; one semester at the Vienna University of Economics and Business (WU Wien) as Government of Austria Fellow; one academic year at the Sapienza University of Rome (La Sapienza) as EU Fellow. Milatović completed his master’s degree in economics (MPhil in Economics) at Oxford University. He was a British Government Chevening Scholarship Fellow. He was also a fellow of the German Konrad Adenauer Foundation. [2] Milatović is fluent in English, speaks Italian and Spanish.

Economics career[]

Milatović started his work experience at NLB Group Podgorica in the risk management team of the Bank, then at Deutsche Bank, Frankfurt in the credit risk assessment team of the Bank focusing on Central and Eastern European countries. Since 2014, he has been working for the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development in the team for economic and political analysis, first as an economic analyst for the region of Southeast Europe, then as an economist for the Western Balkans countries from the office in Podgorica. In 2018, he was promoted to the principal economist for the EU countries, including Romania, Bulgaria, Croatia and Slovenia from the office in Bucharest.

He gained other experiences through the volunteering at the Office for International Cooperation of the Faculty of Economics Podgorica, the Embassy of Montenegro in Rome, and the Center for Civic Education in Podgorica, attending schools and trainings including the Model United Nations in New York, School of European Integration in Podgorica, Campus for Finance at WHU – Otto Beisheim School of Management in Germany, AIESEC in Podgorica, Oxbridge Academic Programs in Oxford, the International Monetary Fund (Financial Programming and Policies, as well as Debt Sustainability Analysis). He spent one month at the University of Beijing attending the joint summer program of the London School of Economics and University of Beijing on The Global Economy with the focus on the role of China. He was chosen to attend the first Leadership Academy of Stanford University for the Western Balkans led by the Professor Francis Fukuyama at the University of Belgrade. [3]

He has published a number of articles and co-authored two books.

Political career[]

On 5 November 2020, the Prime Minister-designate of Montenegro, Zdravko Krivokapić, appointed him as a candidate for the Minister of Economy and Economic Development in the new cabinet of Montenegro.[4]
