Jan Tullis is a geologist known for her research on the deformation of crustal rocks and an educator known for educating and mentor young scientists.

Education and career[]

Tullis has an A.B. in geology from Carleton College (1965) and a Ph.D. in geology from the University of California, Los Angeles (1971). In 1970, she became a research assistant at Brown University and was named a full professor there in 1989.[1] When Tullis moved to emeritus status at Brown in 2013, alumni, faculty and staff gathered to acknowledge her contribution to the education of students over her career.[2]

Tullis has been recognized for her career-long contributions to geoscience by the Geological Society of America,[3] and specifically acknowledged for her role in education of geologists by the Association for American Geoscientists Foundation.[4] Tullis has also been acknowledged by Brown University for excellence in teaching.[5]

Research[]

Tullis's research centers on experimental work designed to answer questions about field observations, with a particular focus on the deformation of rocks. Her early research was on the alignment of crystals in quartzites.[6] From there, she moved on to examine how deformation of rocks was impacted by the surrounding chemical environment and phase changes.[7][8] Tullis has also worked on deformation in polyphase aggregates.[9]
