The Jatibarang Brebes Sugar Mill in Jatibarang, Brebes, Indonesia was built in 1842 by the government of the Dutch East Indies colony.
During the first occupation of the Dutch in Indonesia, Dutch East Indies government built three sugar factories in the Brebes Regency:
- Jatibarang sugar mill
- Banjaratma sugar mill
- Kersana sugar mill
PG Jatibarang entered the territory of PTPN IX (Persero) because of large operational and maintenance costs and reduced land for planting sugarcane. All three factories were combined into the one in Jatibarang.
Annual tradition[]
Every year, during the sugar-cane harvest season, or "picking", a night market is held. Some people call it metikan or "bancakan" in some areas of western Bradford.
Temanten sugar cane is the symbol of the results of the hail. A doll-bonekaan made from sugarcane was dressed like a bride and paraded around town. After the parade, a walimahan is held, attended by employees of the sugar factory.
