Playing career[]

Swayman started for the South Anchorage High School Wolverines in 2014–15 and spent the following season with the Pike's Peak Minors 18U AAA program of the North American Hockey Prospects Hockey League. Swayman spent two games as the backup goaltender for the Tri-City Storm before playing a full season with the Sioux Falls Stampede in the USHL during the 2016–17 season.[7]

He attended the University of Maine, where he was the starting goalie for all three seasons he played there. During his junior season in 2019–20, Swayman dominated Hockey East with a .939 save percentage and 2.07 goals against average in 34 games, earning conference Player of the Year honors and the Goaltending Champion title. He was also honored nationally, winning the Mike Richter Award for the best collegiate goaltender and was a top-3 finalist for the Hobey Baker Award, the top collegiate hockey player.[8]

Swayman was drafted by the Boston Bruins in 2017, but did not officially sign with them until March 17, 2020, after the conclusion of his junior season at the University of Maine.[9]

Swayman's professional career began with the Providence Bruins (the AHL affiliate of the Boston Bruins) in the 2020–21 season. He was called up to the NHL midway through the season when Bruins goaltenders Tuukka Rask and Jaroslav Halák were unavailable due to an injury and a positive COVID-19 test, respectively. Swayman made his NHL debut and secured his first NHL win on April 6, 2021 with a 4–2 victory against the Philadelphia Flyers. He then notched his first NHL shutout on April 16, 2021 with a 3–0 win over the New York Islanders. Swayman went on to finish the 2020–21 regular season with a 7–3–0 record in 10 games played, with a goals against average of 1.50 along with a .945 save percentage.[10]
