Jose D. Lina Jr. (born December 22, 1951),[1] better known as Joey Lina, is a Filipino lawyer, businessman, public servant, radio personality, and politician who is the former governor of Laguna and former Senator of the Philippines.[1] He is currently the anchor of the program Sagot Ko 'Yan! on TeleRadyo (previously on radio via DZMM).

Early life[]

Lina was born on December 22, 1951 in Masapang, Victoria, Laguna. He obtained an AB Economics degree from the University of Santo Tomas in 1975 and finished law in the top 10 of his Class in the University of the Philippines in 1979. He then passed the Bar Exams in 1980.[1]

He was already practicing law when Ninoy Aquino was assassinated in 1983. He became an activist as he and his wife became one of the leaders of the protest movement against dictator Ferdinand Marcos.[2]

Political career[]

After Marcos was ousted, Lina was appointed as acting Governor of Metro Manila, serving from 1986 to 1987.[2]

Lina was the youngest member of the Senate from 1987 to 1992. He was reelected in 1992. Lina has filled 338 bills and was responsible for several landmark measures including the Urban Development and Housing Act of 1992 and the creation of the Philippine Sports Commission.[1]

He was then elected Governor of Laguna and served from 1995 to 2001. Originally planning to run for a third term, he was appointed Secretary of the Interior and Local Government on January 24, 2001, serving until 2004.[1][2] He attempted a comeback for Governor of Laguna in 2010 under the Liberal Party ticket but was unsuccessful.

He is at present the president of Manila Hotel.[3][citation needed]

Personal life[]

Lina is married to Loretta Atienza, with whom he has six children. He is also known for being part of the three tenors alongside fellow government officials Bayani Fernando and the late General Angelo Reyes.[1]
