John Metchie III (born July 18, 2000) is a Canadian football wide receiver for the Alabama Crimson Tide.
Early years[]
Metchie was born in Taiwan and lived in Ghana and Canada before moving to the United States to attend high school.[1] He attended St. James School, Maryland in Hagerstown, Maryland and spent a post-graduate year at the Peddie School in Hightstown, New Jersey.[2] Metchie committed to the University of Alabama to play college football.[3][4]
College career[]
As a true freshman at Alabama in 2019, Metchie played in all 13 games and had four catches for 23 yards.[5] Metchie became one of Alabama's top three receivers his sophomore year in 2020 racking up 916 yards on 55 receptions with 6 touchdowns.[6][7] He was the first receiver to win the Jon Cornish Trophy as the top Canadian in NCAA football in the 2020 season.
In his junior and final season at Alabama, Metchie finished with 96 receptions for 1,142 yards with 8 touchdowns. He tore his ACL in the SEC Championship game on December 4, 2021, ending his season prematurely.[8]
