John Peter Rillie (born 4 November 1971) is an Australian basketball coach and former professional player who is an assistant coach of the UC Santa Barbara Gauchos men's basketball team and the Australia men's national basketball team.[1]

Playing career[]

Rillie spent the majority of his career in the National Basketball League (NBL). In his first season in the NBL, Rillie won Rookie of the Year honours playing for the Brisbane Bullets. He was known for his long range shooting. He has also played for Gonzaga University[2] in the United States and with AEK Athens BC in Greece. On 18 February 2009, Rillie hit ten three-pointers in the Crocs' 103–96 win over the Perth Wildcats in their elimination quarter-final. Rillie ended up with 34 points and three rebounds. He also holds the record for the points scored by an Australian, with 45 points.[3] Rillie played 481 NBL games and averaged 16.3 points, 3.7 assists and 5.8 rebounds per game.[4]

Coaching career[]

Rillie was an assistant coach at Boise State University in Boise, Idaho, from 2011 to 2017.[5]

On 16 May 2017, it was announced that Rillie was hired as an assistant coach for the UC Santa Barbara Gauchos men's basketball team.[6]

On 13 July 2021, Rillie replaced David Patrick as an assistant coach for the Australia men's national basketball team competing in the Tokyo Olympics.[7][8]
