John Christopher Ingham Roper-Curzon, 20th Baron Teynham (25 July 1928 – 27 May 2021), popularly known as Captain John, was a British peer.[1][2]

Life[]

He was born on 25 December 1928. His father was Christopher John Henry Roper-Curzon, and mother was Elspeth Grace Whitaker. John's third name is in honour of Benjamin Ingham, his ancestor.[3][4] John's father was the 19th Baron Teynham. On 31 October 1964, John married Elizabeth Scrymgeour-Wedderburn,[5][6][7] Elizabeth and John got married at her home.

John Roper-Curzon attended Eton College in Windsor. While in the Coldstream Guards, he gained the rank of 2nd lieutenant, and in the year 1948, he was elevated to Captain while serving in the Buffs (TA) in Palestine.[8] Between 1953 to 1955, he served as the commander-in-chief's aide-de-camp. In 1956, he again became the commander-in-chief's aide-de-camp.[7] On 5 May 1972, he succeeded as the 20th Baron Teynham.[7]

He inherited Pylewell Park from his mother Elspeth Grace Whitaker.[9][10][11] In 1988, he and his wife Elizabeth moved there and spent nearly a decade.[7][12]

Teynham died in May 2021 at the age of 92.[13] He was the maternal grandfather of Birdy.[14]
