John K. Tien is an American army officer, engineer and public official who has served as the United States Deputy Secretary of Homeland Security in the Biden administration since 2021.

Education[]

Tien earned a Bachelor of Science degree in civil engineering from the United States Military Academy where he was the first Asian-American to serve as First Captain and Brigade Commander, the highest-ranked West Point cadet (equivalent to a valedictorian at other universities).[1]

After graduating from West Point, Tien was granted leave from the Army to study at the University of Oxford in the United Kingdom as a Rhodes Scholar, earning a Bachelor of Arts degree from The Queen's College.[1] Per Oxford custom, his degree was promoted to a Master of Arts by seniority, seven years after Tien's matriculation.

Career[]

Tien graduated from West Point on May 27, 1987 and was commissioned as a Second lieutenant in the United States Army;[2] where he served for 24 years, retiring with the rank of colonel. During the Clinton administration, Tien worked as an aide in the Office of the United States Trade Representative as a White House Fellow .[3] During the Obama administration, Tien was the United States National Security Council Senior Director for Afghanistan and Pakistan in 2009-2011.[4] Since 2011, Tien has been a managing director of the Citigroup regional services division in Atlanta.[5]

On April 12, 2021, President Joe Biden announced his intent to nominate Tien to be the United States Deputy Secretary of Homeland Security under Alejandro Mayorkas.[1] On April 22, 2021, his nomination was sent to the Senate.[6] On June 17, 2021, Tien was confirmed in a full Senate vote by 60-34.[7] He was sworn in as Deputy Secretary on June 24, 2021.[8][9]

Personal life[]

Prior to becoming DHS Deputy Secretary, Tien resided in Atlanta with his wife Tracy Tien and their two daughters.[1]
