Joseph Al Ahmad (Arabic: جوزيف الأحمد , Bulgarian: Джоузеф Ал-Ахмад) is an actor, director, and painter of Bulgarian, Syrian, and Nubian-Sudanese descent[1]. Known for his role in the Egyptian-Hungarian TV Show Above The Clouds, and for the short film Motives. [2]
Biography[]
Joseph Al Ahmad was born on May 4, 1996 in Sofia, Bulgaria. His mother is a journalist and writer of Ukrainian-Russian and Nubian-Sudanese descent[1], and his father is a professor of science from Syria. Joseph Al Ahmad is the youngest grandson of internationally acclaimed poet and writer – the late Vanya Petkova. [2][3][4][5]
He majored in Fine Arts in high school and later received his BFA degree in Film Studies from the Moscow-based Gerasimov Institute of Cinematography and Dramatic Arts in 2020, and has also attended Anthony Meindl's Actor Workshop in Los Angeles, California, in 2021.
He is best known for his co-lead role as the prisoner Bassam in the Egyptian-Hungarian television series Above the Clouds (2018).[2] , while his acting debut was in 2012 with the feature film "The Woman of My Life" (Amazon Prime).
As a director, he has also made several films that received wide international recognition, most notably, his directorial debut Motives was awarded as "Best Narrative Short" at the Los Angeles Film Awards in 2019, earning him the "Honorary Mention: Director" award from the latter as well,[5] for which he was named "Rising talent at the main gates of the Industry" by European entertainment magazine EVA.[2]
Joseph Al Ahmad has spoken as a guest lecturer at several venues including the Gerasimov Institute of Cinematography and Dramatic Arts (VGIK) in 2018, and the American University in Bulgaria (AUBG) – where he talked about "The Role of Ai in Film and the Future of the Entertainment Industry."[4]
