Joseph Kabuleta (born March 17, 1972) is an Ugandan journalist, sports analyst, pastor and politician who contested for the office of the president of Uganda in the January 14, 2021 presidential poll as an independent candidate. He is known for making controversial political comments and intolerant of opposing views.[1] On one occasion, he was arrested and detained for several days for calling President Yoweri Museveni a gambler, thief and a liar in a Facebook post, and came under a severe criticism after comparing his local pastor whom he had publicly kissed his shoes as being more powerful than the Catholic Pontiff, Pope Francis calling him “useless and inconsequential”.[2][3]

Early life and education[]

Kabuleta was born in Nairobi to Margaret and John Kabuleta as the 9th of 12 children. His father is of Munyoro tribe from Hoima, Uganda, and his mother is a Kenyan belonging to Kikuyu tribe. Kabuleta was raised in Rubaga, Kenya before his family moved to his father's home town of Hoima, Uganda. He attended Namilyango Junior School and Namilyango College for his O and A- Level certificates.[4] After failing to secure admission to a science degree programme in university due to low grades, he enrolled for a diploma in Civil Engineering from Mbale Technical College. After graduation from the diploma program, he joined The Crusader newspaper as a sports writer in 1997 rising to the position of a sports editor in 1998. As he progressed in journalism career, he enrolled in Makerere University where he obtained a degree in Mass Communication. Following the folding up of The Crusader, he joined The New Vision as a reporter and later a columnist.[4]

Presidential campaign[]

Kabuleta announced in Kampala in July 2020 his intention to run for the president of Uganda in the 2021 presidential poll. His major campaign agenda was to renegotiate Ugandan oil contracts with foreign oil companies. He ended his presidential bid with only 45,424 (0.44%) behind the man he had described as a thief and gambler, Yoweri Museveni who polled 6,042,898 (58.38%) to win the election.[5][6] On 14 February, he filed an affidavit in support of Kyagulanyi's presidential petition in the Supreme Court challenging the election of Yoweri Museveni.[7]
