Joy Gorman Wettels (born October 26, 1973) is an American television producer and partner at American Entertainment Company Anonymous Content.[1] She is the executive producer of the Netflix series 13 Reasons Why and the Apple series Home Before Dark.
Early life[]
Gorman Wettels grew up in Yonkers, New York. She enrolled at Barnard College at Columbia University and joined the college's revue The Varsity Show.[2] After spending her post-college years working in casting and development, Gorman became a manager in 2002, with two young clients, Dana Fox, and Brian Yorkey whom she had met through The Varsity Show:[3]
Career[]
Gorman Wettels is a partner at Anonymous Content[4] and executive producer of the Netflix/Paramount series 13 Reasons Why,[5][6] and is featured in the after show Beyond the Reasons.[7] Gorman Wettels is also Executive Producer of the Apple/Paramount TV series,[8] Home Before Dark, inspired by the life of Hilde Lysiak, a 9-year-old investigative journalist. She developed the show from inception with Dana Fox, Dara Resnik, and Jon M. Chu, who directed.[9][10][11] She is currently in production on a multi-part follow up series based on the docu-series Eyes on the Prize[12] in partnership with Black Lives Matter co-founder Patrisse Cullors.[citation needed]
Gorman Wettels has also produced The Meddler (2015) for Sony Pictures Classics,[13] and Seeking A Friend For The End Of The World (2012) for Focus Features.[14] Gorman produced the documentary This is Personal which premiered at Sundance in 2019.[15] Produced with Rebecca Walker, it is a portrait of intersectional feminism starting at the 2017 Women's March.
Gorman Wettels is a member of the Producers Guild of America[16] and the Television Academy.[17]
Awards[]
13 Reasons Why received 2018 Television Academy Honors for advancing social change.[18] On behalf of the 13 Reasons Why team, she's accepted a Sentinel Award,[19] Television Academy Honors and the 2018 Mental Health America Media Award.[20] Joy has been awarded The American Legion Hollywood Post 43 Patriot Award, for service to veterans and Hollywood.
