Kaachi (Korean가치; RRGachi; MRKach'i; lit. value: stylized in all caps) is a British pop girl group formed by FrontRow Records, consisting of members Coco, Nicole and Chunseo. They debuted on 15 April 2020 with the digital single "Your Turn".[1][2][3][4] Originally debuting as a 4-member group, Dani left the group on 23 July 2021 due to unenclosed disagreements with the company.

History[]

Pre-debut[]

Kaachi was formed in January 2020 through FrontRow Records. The original lineup consisted of members Nicole, Dani, Chunseo, and KG, all of whom were former members of UJJN, a London K-pop dance cover group. However, KG quietly departed from the group due to personal reasons sometime in January and was replaced by Miso. On 29 February 2020, Kaachi performed their debut song Your Turn prior to its release at Super Kpop Weekends in London. Miso left the group in March 2020 and was replaced by Coco.

2020-present: "Your Turn", "Photo Magic" and Dani's departure[]

On 11 April 2020, FrontRow Records announced that Kaachi's debut song would be named "Your Turn". The single was officially released on 15 April 2020 and the music video was officially released on 29 April 2020. The release was met with heavy criticism due to poor vocals and dancing skills. Kaachi performed in Joy Ruckus Club's Asian-American virtual music festival on 17 October 2020.[5]

On 4 November, their single "Photo Magic" was released along with a music video.[6][7]

On 1 January 2021, Kaachi performed on the London's New Year's Day Parade.[8] Kaachi released the Spanish versions of their previous two releases, "Your Turn" and "Photo Magic", on 30 June.[9]

On 23 July, FrontRow Records confirmed that Dani's contract had expired and she would leave the group.[9] On 19 August, the group released their third single "The One Thing", and their first since Dani's departure from the group.[10] Kaachi appeared at the Joy Ruckus Club's New Beginnings with K-Pop Superfest festival on 27 August, where they premiered the song "Extra Special", which would later be released officially on 2 September.

Controversies[]

Debut[]

Kaachi's debut was heavily criticized by the public due to three members not having Korean heritage and for their mediocre skill levels due to lack of training. The non-Korean members were accused of being "Koreaboos" and all members were accused of "shortcutting" the Korean idol training process.[11] This criticism only increased after the group admitted in their Channel 4 mini-documentary that they had not finished choreographing their dance until the night before their music video was filmed.[12] Many rumors were circulated about Kaachi as well, including allegations of plagiarizing authentic K-pop groups.[13][14] On 29 April 2020, Kaachi's producer, Monica Lee, uploaded a video on YouTube to clarify the rumors about Kaachi.[15] As of 14 May 2021, the video was removed from their YouTube channel. This occurred two days after Oli London released a video disputing the claim that Monica made in her video where she stated that FrontRow and Kaachi are not connected to him.[16]

Relationship with Oli London[]

Despite multiple statements from both the members of Kaachi and their label, FrontRow Records, denying any relationship with Oli London, FrontRow has collaborated with him multiple times in the past. This can be seen with Oli London being featured as the celebrity editor in the April 2020 issue of KJOU, FrontRow's magazine where Coco also happened to be the operations director before she joined Kaachi.[17] Oli very publicly helped promote this magazine when it came out.[18][19]

Coco and Monica both worked with Oli London in his music video for Mirror Mirror; Coco appeared in the video and Monica was given special thanks.[20] Both Coco and Monica were FrontRow employees when the music video was filmed, but Coco was not yet a member of Kaachi.

Coco was also seen on the set of Oli London's Plastic Surgery Knifemares episode that aired on 6 August 2020. However, she did not physically appear in the episode.[21][22] It is unclear if she was a member of Kaachi when this show was filming.

Oli was also part of Kaachi's mini-documentary with Channel 4 that was released on 26 May 2020.[12] Channel 4 credited Oli London as Kaachi's publicist and although FrontRow has stated that the credits in the documentary were mislabeled, they have never specifically denied Oli's title in this documentary or his doing publicity work for Kaachi or FrontRow Records.[23][24]
