Kankarbagh, or Kankarbagh Colony, is a neighborhood and residential area in Patna.[1] It is one of the largest colonies of Asia, and population wise it is the second largest.[2]

Overview[]

Established back in 1916, it used to be the largest colony of Asia. As it spans such a huge area, there are numerous big and small colonies in it. It is spread in an area of around 900 acres. It stretches roughly from Panch Shiv Mandir in west to Kumhrar in East. The word Kankarbagh means garden of kankar (stone chips).

Kankarbagh displays an urban blend of residential colonies. It has a diverse selection of restaurants from Punjabi restaurants to South Indian, and from road side stalls to cafés. Several new restaurants and cafes have developed in Kankarbagh. Shopping is one of the favourite recreational activities of the locals. Kankarbagh has outlets of KFC, Domino's Pizza. Numerous super markets including Vishal Mega Mart, 9 To 9 Super market, Daily Needs exist in Kankarbagh. Vasan Eye Care, the World's Largest Eye Care Hospital chain, is also present. Two shopping cum multiplex malls are also under-construction. Kankarbagh Sabzi Mandi, near auto stand, is the largest wholesale fruit, vegetable and fish market in Kankarbagh. Other popular vegetable markets includes Rajendra Nagar Sabzi mandi, Gandhi Nagar Sabzi mandi and Bhootnath Rd Sabzi mandi. This vast colony along with numerous shopping complexes and eateries is a place for fitness enthusiasts. It has upcoming gyms with world class amenities like the Mutants gym, opposite dominoes pizza, golds gym, talwalkars, etc. There are almost 30 to 35 parks in K'bagh in which Kumhrar Park, Shivaji Park and Lohia Nagar park are the most popular.

State Bank of India, Union Bank of India, HDFC, ICICI, Bank of India, Punjab National Bank, Axis Bank, Central Bank of India, Indian Overseas Bank, Oriental Bank, IDBI, Bank of Baroda, United Bank, Allahabad Bank, Canara Bank, Dena Bank, Corporation Bank, Syndicate Bank, etc. are some of the major banks located here. The major landmarks at Kankarbagh are Panch Shiv Mandir in west (PIN Code- 800 020) and TV Tower in Bhootnath Road (Pin Code- 800 026) etc. It has almost all facilities that one requires while living the city life. Since, this colony took a concrete shape, people from different places have come and settled here.

Kankarbagh is developing into an uptown area with expanding and soaring residential apartments.

This colony is divided sector wise and there are parks for small children to play. In K'bagh one can also find small parks in almost all the colonies and blocks. There is sports complex also in this colony, known as Patliputra Sports Complex.[3] Kankarbagh Circle covers 11 Wards of Patna Municipal Corporation, ward number being 29-35, 44-46 and 55. The main area covered under this circle is New ByPass road area, Kankarbagh road area, Chiraiyatad railways bridge area, Gandhi setu road area and Saidpur area.

Numerous Multi-Speciality Hospitals are spread throughout the area.

Transport and Connectivity[]

Kankarbagh is well connected to main areas of Patna by mini buses. Auto-rickshaw and cycle rickshaw are available at most times.

Rajendra Nagar Terminal, one of city's important and suburb Railway station and the Patna's busiest Railway station Patna Junction is less than a kilometer away from Kankarbagh. Patna Airport is located about 8.65 km from the Kankarbagh More. Patliputra bus stand Patna is located about 6.5 km from kankarbagh

Patliputra Sports Complex[]

The Patliputra Sports Complex (formally Kankarbagh sports Complex) is a sports stadium in Kankarbagh. The Patliputra Sporting Complex was also known as Rainbow Field (before construction of sport complex).

This beautifully designed sports complex is fully equipped with facilities for both outdoor and indoor games. Football, hockey, kabaddi, table tennis, carrom, swimming, wrestling, taekwondo are some of the games organised here. This complex may boast of fine facilities, but it is not for the benefit of the locality that it is based in. The sports complex has been reserved only for state and national level events. However, the complex is open to host college events and seminars too.

Since the inception of Pro Kabaddi League in 2014, the stadium has played host to the Home matches of Patna Pirates (Winners of the 2016 Pro Kabaddi League season (January) and 2016 Pro Kabaddi League season (June). With mostly hundred percent attendance, the matches have become one of the most fun ones to watch.

The 31st National Taekwondo Championship, the 75th Senior National Table Tennis Championship and multiple junior Basketball and Tennis competitions have been hosted by the stadium.

Kumhrar Park[]

Kumhrar, or Kumrahar, is the remains of an ancient city of Pataliputra, which 5 km of east from Patna Junction railway station, on Kankarbagh Main Road.[4]

The archaeological remains of the Mauryan period (322–185 BCE), has been discovered here, this include the ruins of a hypostyle 80-pillared hall [5][6] The excavation finding here dates back to 600 BCE,[7] and marks the ancient capital of Ajatshatru, Chandragupta and Ashoka, and collectively the relics range from four continuous periods from 600 BCE to 600 CE.[7]

Kumhrar park’s museum, where the old artefacts taken out of the excavation of old historical Maurya Pataliputra of ancient time are preserved.
