Karere Railway Station was a passenger and cargo tramway, and later railway station on the Foxton Branch Line in New Zealand, south of Palmerston North. The station opened in 1873 and closed in 1959 when the branchline was closed.
The station was important for the district's industries; local goods were railed to Foxton's port and shipped away. The station's cargo facilities were expanded in 1930 due to the lack of capacity to serve demanding local industries.[1][2] These improvements included a small race and cattle yard.[3]
A cyclone, which also damaged the Terrace End Railway Station in Palmerston North, destroyed Karere Station's passenger shelter in 1936. The newspapers said that the structure was picked up by the wind and thrown across the railway line.[4] It was not rebuilt.
The Foxton branchline was closed and ripped up in 1959. A concrete platform remains along State Highway 58.
