^ Breckinridge commanded the First and Second Divisions of the Army of the Valley, while the others reported directly to Early. Since the Valley District was itself the Second Corps of the Army of Northern Virginia it is inaccurate to refer to these two divisions as a "corps", however much it functioned like one.
