Alia Advani (born 31 July 1992), known professionally as Kiara Advani ([kɪˈjaːra əɽˈʋaːɳi]), is an Indian actress who predominantly works in Hindi films. After making her debut in Fugly (2014), she played the real-life character of Sakshi Rawat, a hotel manager and cricketer M. S. Dhoni's wife, in Neeraj Pandey's critically and commercially successful sports biopic M. S. Dhoni: The Untold Story (2016).

She achieved critical acclaim for her performance in the Netflix anthology film Lust Stories (2018). She gained further success starring in films like the Telugu political thriller Bharat Ane Nenu (2018), the Hindi romance Kabir Singh (2019), Good Newwz (2019), Laxmii (2021) and Shershaah (2021).

Early life and background[]

Kiara was born to Jagdeep Advani, a Sindhi Hindu businessman and Genevieve Jaffrey, a teacher whose father was a Muslim from Lucknow and whose mother was a Christian of Scottish, Irish, Portuguese, and Spanish ancestry; and had a Bengali godmother.[4][5][6] Born as Alia Advani, she changed her first name to Kiara prior to the release of her first film, Fugly, in 2014.[1] She has stated that it was Salman Khan's suggestion to change her name from Alia to Kiara, as Alia Bhatt was her contemporary.[7] In an interview to Filmfare in 2019, she stated that the name was inspired from Priyanka Chopra's character Kiara in the film Anjaana Anjaani.[8][9] The elder of two siblings, Advani has a younger brother, Mishaal. She is also related to several celebrities through her maternal family. Actors Ashok Kumar and Saeed Jaffrey are her step-great-grandfather and great-uncle, respectively, whereas model Shaheen Jaffrey is her aunt. Her mother Genevieve Advani's step-mother is Bharti Ganguly who is the daughter of Ashok Kumar.[3][10]

Career[]

Hindi and Telugu career beginnings (2014–2018)[]

Advani promoting Fugly in 2014

Advani debuted into Bollywood with Kabir Sadanand's 2014 comedy Fugly, that also had an ensemble cast of Mohit Marwah, Arfi Lamba, Vijender Singh, and Jimmy Sheirgill.[11] Taran Adarsh of Bollywood Hungama said: "Kiara Advani catches you completely unaware" and has the "combination of looks and talent".[12] Mehul S Thakkar of Deccan Chronicle noted her performance as being "very striking" and said she "shows a lot of promise".[13] It underperformed at the box office.[14]

Advani during the promotions of M. S. Dhoni: The Untold Story in 2016

In 2016, Advani was seen in Neeraj Pandey's sports film M. S. Dhoni: The Untold Story—an official biopic of popular cricketer M. S. Dhoni who was the former captain of Indian cricket team.[15] While Sushant Singh Rajput was selected for Dhoni's role, she played his wife Sakshi Rawat, a hotel manager.[16] One of the year's top grosser films, it earned 216 crores worldwide.[17] In 2017, she played newcomer Mustafa Burmawalla's love interest in the Abbas–Mustan directed action thriller Machine.[18] It was a box office disappointment.[19]

Advani then made her OTT debut with the Netflix 2018 anthological movie Lust Stories, dealing with female sexuality and consisting of four segments.[20] In Karan Johar's segment, she played a newly married wife whose husband (played by Vicky Kaushal) fails to recognise her sexual dissatisfaction.[21] Writing for NDTV, Raja Sen found her to be "positively lovely" in it.[22]

Advani in 2018

By entering Telugu cinema, she signed the Mahesh Babu starrer Bharat Ane Nenu, a political actioner from Koratala Siva about a student who unexpectedly becomes chief minister of Andhra Pradesh.[23] Janani K of India Today opined that she "shines in her brief role" but added that her character was "more of an eye-candy who doesn't add any purpose to the story".[24] The film earned 225 crores worldwide, making it one of Telugu cinema's highest grossers.[25][26][27] In September 2018 a music video named "Urvashi", sung by Yo Yo Honey Singh, was released featuring her and Shahid Kapoor.[28]

Establishment (2019–present)[]

Boyapati Srinu's Telugu action drama Vinaya Vidheya Rama was Advani's first release of 2019.[29] In a scathing review for The Hindu, Sangeetha Devi Dundoo wrote, "It isn't Kiara Advani's fault that she looks lost in the melee."[30] Advani returned to Hindi cinema with a special appearance in Abhishek Varman's period drama Kalank.[31]

Advani with Shahid Kapoor promoting Kabir Singh in 2019

Her next appearance was in Sandeep Vanga's romantic drama Kabir Singh alongside Shahid Kapoor. An adaptation of Vanga's 2017 Telugu movie Arjun Reddy,[32] it is about the titular character, played by Kapoor, who goes on a self-destructive path and becomes an alcoholic surgeon after his lover, played by Advani, marries someone else. Critics responded negatively to the film's depiction of misogyny and toxic masculinity.[33] Her final role that year was in Raj Mehta's comedy film Good Newwz, about two couples' tryst with in vitro fertilization.[34] Reviewing the film for Mint, Udita Jhunjunwala found her to be "endearing as the god-fearing expectant mother-to-be".[35] Both Kabir Singh and Good Newwz rank among the highest-grossing Hindi films of the year.[36]

Advani at the screening of Guilty in 2020

In 2020, Advani starred in Guilty, a Netflix thriller film about sexual assault. Ektaa Malik of The Indian Express considered the film to be a "lost opportunity" and added that Advani's character had been "reduced to the 'tortured-artistic-creative' types"[37] while Rohan Naahar of Hindustan Times wrote, "Kiara delivers an absolutely electric performance as the unreliable Nanki, a fiery college student with a fondness for Faiz."[38] During the same year, she was seen as the wife of Akshay Kumar in the horror comedy Laxmii, a remake of the Tamil film Kanchana.[39] Instead of theatres, Laxmii was directly released online owing to COVID-19 pandemic.[40] It received mixed reviews.[41] Abir Sengupta's directorial debut Indoo Ki Jawani (2020), one of the first Bollywood films to release in theatres post reopening and amid the 50% occupancy guideline due to the pandemic, featured Advani as a girl based in Ghaziabad, who finds love in dating apps.[42]

She next featured in Dharma Productions's next production, the 2021 action war film Shershaah, which is based on the life of army officer Vikram Batra (played by Sidharth Malhotra) as his fiancee. The film released on 12 August on Amazon Prime Video.[43]

Upcoming projects[]

She has also committed to essay the female lead opposite Kartik Aaryan in Anees Bazmee's standalone sequel of the 2007 supernatural comedy Bhool Bhulaiyaa.[44][45] Additionally, Advani is reuniting with Dharma Productions and Mehta for the romantic comedy film Jug Jugg Jeeyo, where she is paired opposite Varun Dhawan.[46] She has also signed to play one of the lead opposite Vicky Kaushal and Bhumi Pednekar in Dharma Productions action comedy film Mr. Lele, directed by Shashank Khaitan.[47] In July 2021, she was announced as the leading lady in an untitled trilingual film in Telugu, Tamil and Hindi directed by S. Shankar co-starring Ram Charan.[48] She has also committed to recollaborate with Kartik Aaryan in Sajid Nadiadwala's epic musical saga, directed by Sameer Vidhwans.[49] Kiara is also going to appear in Ashutosh Gowariker's next Karram Kurram, which will be based on the success of the Shri Mahila Griha Udyog Lijjat Papad.[50]
