Date | September 16, 2020 |
Victim | Ee Lee |
Ee Lee (1984 – September 19, 2020) was an Asian-American woman who was raped and killed in a daylight attack in Milwaukee. She had previously killed her infant daughter in Madison, Wisconsin, but was deemed mentally incompetent in the killing.
Background[]
In January 2007, Lee killed her infant daughter.[1][2] Lee admitted to police that she hit, suffocated, pinched and bit her daughter on a regular basis leading up to killing her.[1] In November 2007, Lee was ruled unfit to stand trial due to being mentally incompetent.[3]
Assault[]
According to the criminal complaint Lee was beaten and raped, and then dragged to the pond in Washington Park and left to die. She was found half-clothed and unconscious and taken to Froedtert Hospital where she died three days later.[4][5]
Suspects[]
Two local African American teens, Kamare Lewis, 17, and Kevin Spencer, 15, were both arrested and charged with first-degree intentional homicide. Lewis had allegedly recorded the rape and killing on his phone and had shared the video with his friends. Approximately nine other youths were present in the video.[6][7][8]
According to the criminal complaint in two different interviews, one of the suspects said that they never called for help at all because he thought she was dead or soon to be dead and it "wouldn't have made a difference and that he didn't really care about her at all because she is not someone he knows personally."[4][9]
Response[]
Vigils were held for Lee by the Hmong American Women’s Association and broader Wisconsin Hmong community.[10][11]
