Kim-Joy Hewlett (born 17 May 1991), known professionally as Kim-Joy, is a Belgian-British baker, cookbook author, and baking columnist for The Guardian.[1][2][3] Hewlett was a finalist in The Great British Bake Off (series 9).[4][5]

Early life and education[]

Kim-Joy Hewlett was born in Belgium, of a British father and Malaysian Chinese mother.[6] At the age of 5, her family moved to London.[7] She has an older and younger brother.[2]

Hewlett received a GCSE in art and an A Level in textiles, [2] an undergraduate degree in sociology from the University of Bristol, and a master's degree in psychology from the Leeds Beckett University.[6][2]

Career[]

Hewlett has practiced psychological wellbeing, working to alleviate depression and anxiety,[4][7] and was working towards a clinical psychology doctorate before competing in the 2018 series of The Great British Bake Off, in which she was a finalist.[2][8][9][10] During her time on the series, Hewlett was named star baker twice- once during Spice Week, and once during Vegan Week.[11] Hewlett said she only started baking in earnest about two years before the show.[12]

In addition to writing a regular baking column called "Kim-Joy's baking recipes" for The Guardian,[13] in 2019 Hewlett published a cookbook called Baking with Kim-Joy: Cute and creative bakes to make you smile.[14]

Personal life[]

Kim-Joy Hewlett lives in Leeds, England, with her partner Nabil. [15] Hewlett has discussed struggles with severe childhood social anxiety as a teenager that resulted in her selective mutism,[4][16][17] and a relationship between cooking and reducing anxiety.[1][7]
