KonoSuba: God's Blessing on this Wonderful World! Legend of Crimson[Jp. 1] is a Japanese animated fantasy comedy film based on the light novel Let's Go, Crimson Magic of Explosion!, the fifth volume of KonoSuba series by Natsume Akatsuki.[5] The film was released on August 30, 2019 in Japan. Crunchyroll acquired the rights to release the film in select regions outside of Japan and select theater showings were held in October and November 2019.[6][7][8][9][10][11] Crunchyroll released the subtitled version of the film on their website on March 25, 2020. The dubbed version was initially set for release in April 2020, but ended up being delayed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Crunchyroll would later stream the dub on January 1, 2021.[12] In the film, Kazuma Satou and his party travel to the Crimson Demon village, where they battle a powerful general of the demon king's army.

Plot[]

Kazuma and his party are down on their luck: Megumin's use of explosion magic backfires and they lose all the bounty from their latest quest. The group sits in shame at the adventurer's guild until Yunyun arrives. She tells Kazuma that she needs to have a son with him to save the world and that the Crimson Demon village where she and Megumin are from is under attack by one of the demon king's generals. Later, at Kazuma's mansion, the former part of the story is found to be a falsity written by Megumin and Yunyun's classmate, Arue. Embarrassed, Yunyun heads back to the village.

The next day, the party decide to go to the village. They are teleported outside of it by Wiz, where Kazuma is chased almost to the point of his capture by a group of female orcs; Yunyun appears and the orcs flee. Kazuma's party are then taken to Megumin's house and are greeted by her sister, Komekko. Megumin falls asleep immediately after the group gets there, leaving Kazuma to have an awkward conversation with her parents, Hyoizaburoo and Yuiyui, about the nature of his and Megumin's relationship. When Kazuma reveals that he is rich and owns a mansion, the parents immediately warm up to him. That evening, against the will of Darkness, Yuiyui locks Kazuma in the same room as a sleeping Megumin, hoping to force them into a romantic relationship. Megumin soon leaves via the window.

Megumin leads the party on a tour of the village, including visits to her school and a building that holds the Mage Killer, a weapon said to destroy the world, which she claims is secure. As they go back to Megumin's house, Darkness is accosted by monsters led by Sylvia, a general in the demon king's army. Sylvia retreats after Kazuma introduces himself as Mitsurugi and reveals that he has defeated Beldia, Vanir, and Hans. That night, an alarm for infiltrators is sounded in the village; Kazuma's party almost immediately find Sylvia. Sylvia takes Kazuma to the building holding the Mage Killer. Kazuma opens the door to the weapon after being prompted to do so by Sylvia, then closes the door behind her. He reunites with his party and leaves, but Sylvia fuses with the Mage Killer and destroys the building. She disables almost everyone's magic abilities and starts to destroy the village. Kazuma's group go to find relics that contain a way to stop the weapon. Kazuma can read the relics as they are written in Japanese, and discovers that a rifle from one of the town's shops is needed to destroy the Mage Killer.

They find the rifle while Yunyun distracts Sylvia. Aqua charges it with her magic, but when Kazuma attempts to fire it, nothing happens. When Megumin sets off an explosion aimed at Sylvia, the power is sent into the rifle, which succeeds in loading it to maximum. Komekko fires the rifle, causing Sylvia to be wounded to the brink of death, but as she passes into the afterlife she come across Beldia and Hans and fuses with them, and the three of them revive together as one fused general. Wiz and Vanir show up to find someone in the village who can help make one of Kazuma's items but end up joining the fight. Wiz gets everyone in the village to transfer their magic to Yunyun and Megumin as Kazuma is being taken in by Sylvia as a lover and attached to her chest. Yunyun and Megumin fire a gigantic light of saber and explosion combination right into Kazuma and Sylvia, killing them both. Eris revives Kazuma and he and his party return to Axel.

At a picnic, Megumin asks Kazuma to put her experience points into a skill other than explosion magic, which he seemingly does. She casts an explosion and finds it much stronger than usual, realizing that Kazuma disregarded her request and put the points into explosion magic. As they return to the others, the smoke forms the shape of a heart.

Reception[]

Jordan Ramée reviewing the movie for Gamespot was disappointed, saying that it opens well but eventually falls short.[14] Nick Valdez at Comicbook was much more positive, giving the movie a 5/5 rating.[15] Daniel Kurland from Den of the Geek noted it is satisfying, for a movie that does not aim high.[16] Academy Award-winning screenwriter Roger Avary also gave the film a 5/5 rating, calling it "easily one of the best experiences in a cinema I’ve ever had" and that he "would go as far as saying it’s the reason cinema was invented."[17]
