The Kotka Harbour railway station (Finnish: Kotkan sataman rautatieasema, Swedish: Kotka hamns järnvägsstation) is located in the town of Kotka, Finland, right by the Port of Kotka. It is the terminus of the Kouvola–Kotka railway,[3] and its neighboring station in the west is .[4]
History[]
The predecessor of the contemporary Kotka Harbour halt, Satamakatu, was in use from 1932 to 1938, and was situated some 200 metres (660 ft) further east from the current platform.
The halt was opened for regular use by the trains between Kouvola and Kotka on 31 May 1998, primarily to allow easier access to the town center as well as to serve the customers of the Kristina Cruises passenger terminal in the harbour.[5] Before 1998, the routes of passenger trains were occasionally extended to the site of the current terminus to coincide with the .[3]
Services[]
Kotka Harbour is the southern terminus of all trains on the commuter train line Kouvola–Kotka; some of these services are operated from or continue towards Lahti as well.[6]
Future[]
In the future, two public investment projects in southern Kymenlaakso may increase the demand for passenger trains on the Kotka line: the centralization of the region's specialized healthcare services in the Xamk campus in Kotka. In a study regarding the future of the Kouvola-Kotka/Hamina line by the Finnish Transport Infrastructure Agency, it is stated that the Kotka Harbour station might need to be expanded with another platform track to accommodate the increasing number of services.[7]
