History[]

Mangalore, situated on the west coast of India, is the port city of Karnataka State well known for educational institutions. It is also very popular for famous temples. One amongst them is Kudroli Shree Bhagavathi Kshetra, at Kodialbail in the heart of the city.

Kudroli Shree Bhagavathi Kshetra with a legacy of over 800 years has got its own significance amongst all Bhagavathi Kshetras of Northern Kerala and Dakshina Kannada district of Karnataka. Because it is the only one temple where 14 Bhagavathi's are being worshipped together. Cheerumba Nalvar, Padangara Ivar and Pullurali Aivar. It is also known as Kudroli Kootakala means meeting place of 14 Bhagavathi's together.

Legend: Cheerumbha Bhagavathi also known as Kali appeared from Lord Maheshwara's tear falling on his thigh. She was born to kill Darukasura a demon who was harassing all people, saints and even Devas. She killed Daruka after severe fight. Then she came to this world through a divine ship as advised by Lord Shiva to eliminate evil and thereby save and nourish good, that is as Dushta Samharini and Shista Paripalini. Thus Shree Cheerumba Bhagavathi came to this world along with Shree Eleya Bhagavathi, Dandaraja, Kandakarna, Parivara Daiva Guliga and selected amongst other places. Kudroli as her abode to stay permanently along with Shree Padangara Bhagavathi and Shree Pullurali Bhagavathi. She has been blessing and looking after the welfare of millions of her devotees, since then.

Earlier, Shree Bhagavathi Kshetra was established at Kudroli. But subsequently, due to heavy sea erosion, the place where the temple was established was damaged. At that time there was a landlord by name Shri Manjanna Nayak (ancestors of Bailmane family, even now Bailmane family stays close to temple) who was not having any children, prayed Goddess Bhagavathi to bless him with a child. As a result, he got a child. He was very happy and gifted this land situated at Kodialbail, Mangalore tp Shree Bhagavathi Kshetra. Now this place of worship is called as "Kudroli Shree Bhagavathi Kshetra".

Veerastambha: Another feather in the greatness of this temple is Veerastambha, a granite pillar of about 6 feet tall depicted with artistic carving of Lord Maheshwara and Devi. The pillar has got its own legend and powers. This Veerastambha pillar will be decorated with Jasmine and Kanakaambara flowers during festivals and pooja offerings will be given to this Devine pillar.

Festivals: Nadavali, Bharani, Kaliata and Navarathri are the main festivals celebrated in this temple with pomp and pageantry.

Nadavali is the annual festival being celebrated in the month if March every year. Thousands of devotees assemble together to worship and offer special prayers. The most significant part of this festival is Kenda Seva means Fire offering, wherein the Pathris along with other Poojaris walk on FIRE chanting Devi Stuthi. This event is worth witnessing at least once in one's lifetime.

The temple is more than a thousand years old.

The four renovated temple complexes were built by Karnataka and Kerala artisans using black granite and wood carvings. Ancient single stone multistage granite carvings known as "Veerastambha" can be found in the temple. The famous "Shri Narayana Guru" statue is carved in white marble and sits in the entrance.

The presiding deity of the Kudroli Bhagavathi Temple is "Shri Cheerumbha Bhagavathi".

The Arka Ganapathi and Venkataramana temples are close by and have "Shri Padangara Bhagavathi" and "Shree Pullurali Bhagavathi" as their presiding deities.
