Kunda people

The Cunda or Kunda people are an ethnic group of Zambia, Zimbabwe, and Mozambique. They number approximately at 193,913 people. They speak Chikunda, a Bantu language closely related to Chichewa.

Most Kunda live near the . They celebrate an annual festival called the Malaila festival.[1]

Dating back to the 16th century, the Kunda were slaves working on the Portuguese prazos or estates, in the region of the Zambezi River Valley. Though impacted by the Nguni invasions of the 19th century, over time these people developed a distinct ethnic identity. They continue to live in the areas that were formerly part of the prazo system.^[1]
